I have 2 children who went to Lockhurst. It is a great school, great administrative staff, wonderful teachers and A VERY involved PTSA. All the teachers my children had were very open and receptive with my family. I'm sorry certain parents feel the PTSAA is an elitist group as the door is always open. We constantly court parents, but again, its the same 10-15 parents who show up, which is a shame for a school of over 450 children. When I first starting attending PTSA meetings, I didn't know any of the active members, but soon became friendly and saw how hard they work to make Lockhurst a great school. Go to a meeting, get involved - become a part of this ELITE group and see how much you can add to your child's education.

My son has been at Lockhurst for 5 years. I have seen the good, the bad, and the ugly. The principal's positive attitude and good sense have done wonders for this school, even though the parents are accustomed to badmouthing everything. A positive attitude adopted by the parents could go far here! The parents from this school present as quite spoiled and insincere and this attitude filters right down to the disrespectful behavior of the kids. The PTSA is not inviting, due to the elitist nature of the parents. The office staff are not inviting and for the most part do not want to be bothered. The best thing the school has to offer are the incredibly caring Special Education teachers, a few sincerely dedicated parents, a great after school enrichment program with a lot of variety in classes, an inviting campus, and an outstanding library and librarian.

Lockhurst is a terrific educational environment for our small children. The teachers, principal and, especially, the librarian are top notch...and it's in a safe and quiet neighborhood

I am completely floored by the parents who say this is a great school. Their standards must be a whole lot lower than mine. The office staff could not be less friendly or unhelpful. The principle is one of the most insincere, disingenuous people I've ever met. The kids are so ill-behaved and unmotivated that barely any learning takes place and they create a completely inhospitable environment for the few kids who do want to learn. I do like my kids' teachers and feel that they have a real passion for teaching. They'd do great teaching kids that came to school ready and willing to learn. Also, I second the review of the parent who took her child out do to lack of a GATE program. There is none.

My son has been going to to Lockhurst for a year now. I am concerned that Lockhurst has not been able to increase their API's, their scores have been reducing and it is definitely a matter of concern. I think the Principal should take this seriously and try and work towards increasing the school's API scores

I love Lockhurst. My son loves going to school. His teachers are amazing... professional, bright, energetic, compassionate, enthusiastic about teaching and profoundly dedicated! The office staff is organized, warm and friendly. The principal and assistant principal have a wonderful rapport with their teachers. I witness this first hand while at the 'Teacher Appreciation Luncheon' that the PTA hosted for the teachers and staff. The women on the PTA are 'On The Ball' and it has been my pleasure to be apart of their team this pass year. In short, I will simply say Lockhurst is an exceptional school and genuinely well rounded!

I didn't know anything about Lockhurst before we sent our son there. It turns out to be a little hidden gem. It is small, which is great and the teacher he has is wonderful but retiring this year.

I have a child who has attended Lockhurst for three-years now. He loves his teachers and is always very much excited to go to class every day. He enjoys going to class so much this year that he would like for school to be open on weekends! His teacher is very easy to talk to and all the staff in the main office have always been professional and answered all my questions. Although, I am a member I have not been able to attend the PTA meetings, but I hope to be able to this year. :)

All my children attend Lockhurst Elementary. My experience has been excellent with the teachers,and have found that they are open to working with the parents to ensure each and every child's needs are understood and valued. I have had not as fruitful experiences with the new principal and find her to be unavailable and not particularly receptive to any feedback from the parents. It is often frustrating, and I have found that the best way to make impact or address potential needed change is through the PTA.

We were surprised when we brought our son from an expensive Montessori school (2 yrs) for 1st grade, & were told that he was actually behind. You don't always get what you pay for. Some private schools seem to have some catching up to do since the CA state standards were implemented. Lockhurst's scores have improved dramatically. In general, we have been very satisfied with our son's progress. His test scores and his and our satisfaction with the educational process have improved, although not always consistently. It seemed like every other year we got a 'good' teacher, then every other year a 'great' one. We also noticed that it seems that if you stay active in parent groups (which are very busy and pretty successful), that your kids often 'seem' to get the best teachers. After-school programs are thin (Youth Svcs, etc), probably because of district funding issues.

My son attended lockhurst for five years. Since they brought in the new principal the quality of the education improved drastically. Very safe multicultural scholl. We were very happy with Mr. Anderson teaching fifth grade. Mr. Anderson improved my child's confidence.

This school has stellar enrichment programs and qualified , caring teachers. It's administrative procedures are unfortunately sub-standard. Confusion and lack of accountability leaves communication channels ineffective. Safety is compromised somewhat, most noticeably after school. This is a major concern.

My daughter graduated from Lockhurst in June of 2003 and we were very pleased with the progress she made during her four years there. She began attending Lockhurst in 2nd grade and the education she received there was far superior to that of the private school she previously attended. Mr. Wilcox was a decent principal in our opinion.

My daughter attends at Lockhurst Drive this is her first year, she is in first grade, the teacher is really motivated in her students and involves herself with the students and parents. I appreciate this school with their curriculm and motivation with all the students. I give them all the credits. Thank you!

We organized questions from the LAUSD School Experience Survey into five categories. The respondent group-level results (parents, students, and school employees) show the percent of each respondent group that agree or strongly agree that the school has positive results for that category.

Overall school results for each category are calculated by averaging across group-level results, ensuring that each respondent group is equally represented. Alongside the results for each school are the aggregated results across all LAUSD schools, which are provided as a basis for comparisons.

  • Lockhurst Drive Elementary School is a School for Advanced Studies. We focus on differentiating the curriculum for all students through the use of critical and creative thinking skills that will challenge each child at their developmental thinking level. Students are given the tools of academic language in order to be better thinkers and to understand how they think. We accept students from Kindergarten through 5th grade into our SAS program.
