Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

Serrania is an amazing school. It's a small school in a lovely community with a terrific principal and strong community/parent involvement. My daughter is going into her second year there and so far the staff has exceeded our expectations. Everyone goes above and beyond to make this school both academically challenging and a loving, nurturing environment. We feel very lucky to have found a gem if a school.

Imagine a parent is involved in the school and their child appears to achieve at a higher. This scenario may appear to be favoritism by the administration but studies confirm that students do better in school when their parents volunteer. The child is more confident and may be more likely to apply him or herself accordingly. That being said, there are NO guarantees and certainly NO favoritism as may be suggested in the earlier review. In fact, the parents of many of the students in Serrania's SAS program are not so active while some of the most active families are not (SAS). Placement in these programs is based on test scores and other such objective criteria. Perhaps he/she should be a better role model by taking personal responsibility for his/her child's education and less "sour grapes".

SCES is the best kept secret in the SFV! From the Principal to the faculty, this school is the best!!!

It depends on what you are looking for... If your child is not a good student, has some issues, then Serrania may not be such a bad choice because it seems like you can buy your way into the SAS program by schmoozing with the teachers and the principal. It's really disgusting. API dropped 20 points since the new leadership (both principal and the board).

Serrania is back and ready to rock! When we first started three years ago, it was at a low and all because of the principal. But, with perseverance and support from amazing parents, we were able to replace her with our current principal, Mrs. Wedda. She is sweet yet stern when needed and is an absolute go-getter. She is open to suggestions and help from parents and will make sure she gets the job done; no matter how big or how small. Even the teachers like and respect her. Speaking of the teachers, we have some amazing ones that truly make a difference in our kids' lives. Hands down, we have the best teachers you can ever hope for for your kids. This past year not only did we get an amazing principal, but we also became a charter and our API score is now over 900!!! Our FOS is also another great aspect of Serrania. With the help of our parent volunteers, our kids are not lacking anything. We were able to open our science lab, art lab, computer lab and music all with the help of FOS and our Charter money. It's great to see Serrania back on top where it belongs.

The District is one thing, the ratings here should be based on the school. Serrania is a great school and has come a long way in the last year! The new principal is fantastic - very student conscious, very parent conscious. We have a music program, art classes, PE, computer lab, dancing - lots of enrichment activities! We are about to get a new MAC computer lab and a Science Center! The sky is the limit with Serrania and I am so proud of impact we are making on the community. This is the place to be!

Serrania is a great school and a wonderful learning community. The staff are top-notch and experienced. The parent organizations, Friends of Serrania and Serrania PTA, work well together and they fill the calendar with events that the kids love. The change to charter and a new principal seem to have given the school a chance to make a clean break from the troubled terms of its two previous sub-par principals. A lot of parents gave up on this school a few years back and left because they objected to overall LAUSD policy, and as you can see by some reviews here, there is lingering bitterness. (Notice how the negative reviews here don't mention the quality of instruction and are generally focused on personal parental politics rather than overall educational experience?) But when the dust settled from the mass departure, those who remained at Serrania watched test scores soar (over 900 on our API) and saw the overall atmosphere on campus transformed. It really is a kinder, more positive place to be these days. The teachers are the best, and the kids here know it. We're not going anywhere else. Go, Serrania!

Its great to have a new principal however LAUSD is still very broken. as a current parent that has experienced the school for 7 years its sad to blame former parents that did more for the school than anyone I have seen. They left due to the LAUSD disregard for children and teachers. You can only fight so long before better options over take the drama this school has offered. While its getting better don't forget why we all have the amazing programs that were put in place by our peers before us.

I have nothing but wonderful things to say about Serrania! My son has always had wonderful teachers. The new principal is absolutely wonderful! She is so dynamic and interactive. The scores are going up - this school is wonderful! I love it,

Serrania is a wonderful elementary school inside a beautiful residential neighborhood community that provides excellent support for the school. The students are diverse in background which provides a wonderful and rich mix to the general makeup of the student body. The only complaint that I heard made previously was in respect to the principal who was admittedly, lacking a personal touch. This year a new, young, dynamic principal has taken her place and her energy, enthusiasm and good nature with the students and parents have rectified any complaints that could have been made previously. I have two boys in the school currently and two others on their way. While some are looking to charters for the answer Serrania, also now a charter, is a solution in itself. We are committed to the school as are most of the parents that we know. I highly recommend it.

This will be my son's third year at Serrania. We have had a very positive experience at Serrania the entire time. All of the teachers my son has had have been inspirational, caring and smart. I had no problems with the former Principal, in fact she was always very nice to me and my family. I think that the parents that left the school were actually trouble makers and it is good that they are gone. The school is much more pleasant with out them. The active parents at the school are dedicated, hard working and nice. All in all a great school.

This school has a great community of kids and parents. We have a refreshing bright new principle that has reawakened Serrania and all of its potential. The teachers are smart and committed. The campus is very pretty with many new renovations by our green team such a tree planting, murals, and planters for gardening. The school has recently become a school for enriched studies which is very exciting. A new science lab is being developed first on the agenda. There is a great SAS program for gifted students, and many after school enrichment opportunities.

Serrania is a great school. We have a new principal who is a positive influence at the school. The teachers are great. The school has really fun events and a great group of involved parents. Scores have gone up this year and that is a direct reflection of the hard working teachers. The school is now an affiliated charter.

Serrania is a wonderful neighborhood school! We have weathered the storm of the old principal and are now a Charter School with an emphasis on enrichment and the arts. We have a wonderful new principal who is sharp and kind and willing to work with the parents to improve the school and make it one of the best in the area. The teachers are good and the parents are down to Earth.

The teachers and kids at this school are great. I know that the atmosphere at the school has not been ideal because people didn't like the principle, and many involved parents left the school because they were discouraged by her, but I'm hoping that the new principle will bring a new energy. The school has great potential. I hope some of the parents who left will return again and make the school as great as it could be!

Although there are a lot of issues with the current principal (very unapproachable and bad recess/lunch rules), she is leaving Serrania very soon!! My children have been at Serrania for many years, and the teachers are consistently excellent. They keep the children engaged and interested in their education. The children of Serrania are warm and kind, and the parents are too. Hopefully the new principal wil bring new energy and light into the teachers and childrens lives, but for now I am so grateful to have my children there with the marvalous teachers.

The teachers are great; PTA does a wonderful job as well. Only gave three stars because the principal is not approachable at all and is actually pretty rude. Whenever I see any of the teachers either at school or on occasion, outside of school, they stop and chat and are so welcoming. The principal is exactly opposite. I approached her once with a simple question and she yelled at me. In the last few years, we have lost many bright students to other schools. We need a new principal that will shape this formerly wonderful school back to where it needs to be.

If anyone is looking for a good school, stay away from this school. I agree with all the comments regarding the Principal of this school. I wonder if LAUSD is aware of all the problems that this school has. She really needs to be taken away from all these children. She has major character and anger issue. She is rude and unable to communicate with parents, let alone to children. All the parents that I know of are looking for other schools. She must be removed immediately.

I don't know if it's a LAUSD thing or the lack of strong leadership, however, this school seriously oversold us and undelivered to our son. We, along with several families, are looking for new schools for our children. It's a shame.

I agree with all the latest reviews of Serrania and its prinipal. She is rude and crazy and seems to have no clue how to run a school. How could lausd allow someone this vindictive and cruel to run a school with our children. Someone has to speak out and have her removed.

December 05, 2011
This school used to be a wonderful, exciting and safe school to attend. When the latest principal took over everything went down hill. While this school does still have wonder teachers, a lot them have lost their focus on teaching because of the principal and all of her antics. What other principal do you know of has to take ANGER MANAGEMENT???! This school has lost so many wonderful parents and I don't see it getting any better until this woman is removed. LAUSD needs to get a clue and remove her before enrollment is at ZERO!!!!!

December 02, 2011
It's unfortunate that LAUSD allows someone of this nature to run an elementary school. Children are the ones suffering and so is the community. Many great families have left this once great place. Hopefully something will soon be done to remove this Principal so that Serrania can start to restore its community.

I wrote a review for this school a little bit back, in that review I clearly illustrated how bad this school has become. I didn't name, names but the current principle at Serrania IS THE PROBLEM along with poor API scores and a great exodus of parents including myself from the school. Like I sad before which was magical deleted, I live down the street from the school and my child or future children won't be going to Serrania as long as the current principle is there. STAY AWAY from this school

This is a great school, The principal and staff are great. The children are challenged and inspired. The parents work hard to get the kids the extras they need. The only down fall is a small group of parents who seemed to be more concerned with how recess is handled and weather or not kids can walk around a dusty track in Halloween costumes than in helping to get the items we need that LASUD either can not or won't provide. They seem to have lost focus that school is for education. Any issues with recess are minor and these parents need to keep their focus where it belongs. This school is as good as any private school in the area.

We have 2 children that go to this school. I love the staff and teachers. I understand that the last couple of years have been tough on the teachers, but I'm hoping this year (2010-2011) will be a little more pro-active. I thought the classes became a little to stale after May testing. Please inspire our kids to do more.

The teachers are the best (from K all the way to 5th). And yes, the test scores are great because of these teachers and to the huge effort on behalf of some of us parents. The only downfall is the new principals' rules and regulations that come down swift and severe and leave most of us baffled. Her primary concern controlling the recess and lunch time (which should be free time). Young children are confused about the yard and so is the yard staff. We hope it all goes back to how it used to be before she came along. I hear kids say they'd rather be inside working than outside playing. I still believe in this fantastic school to make a comeback.

We have been at Serrania for a long time and it has been a great experience. The school was strong enough to survive a very rough 2 years with our last principal but it seems as though the new principal has got what it takes to get us back on track. Serrania is a very diverse school and is a good slice of life experience for the kids. There are some outstanding teachers and some that I wish we could remove but I am sure that is the same at any school. There has always been a strong core of parents that are active but there is a lot of apathy within the parent body and not enough families are willing to support the school financially. Our experience has been good though and I do think it is a great school to be at.

I have been at serrania 10 years now and we have a wonderful staff and administration. Principal Babit laid a foundation for a great school and a Distinguished one at that! We had a rough two years with Cordoba as she road on Babit's coat tails taking credit for everything and forcing the community feeling right out of the school, but we now have a new principal Ms. Toder who is doing an outstanding job and the school is pulling right back into place as it was a couple of years ago. More parent involvement would be a great thing as we can always use extra bodies to help fundraise to keep all the excellent programs we have at serrania.

The teachers are nice and caring enough but few inspire the kids to do things outside of their comfort zone and excel. The school is rampant with misfits who are enabled by their parents and school administrators. Many of these parents are highly involved in the parent organizations which is baffling b/c their kids are so disrespectful of their peers, other adults, & teachers. It is a good school with a good base it just needs to clear the dust and freshen up a bit to excel. A friend moved to another nearby elementary and was ashamed to say the Serrania student was the only one in her grade level at the new public school who could not type.

We have loved Serrania for over a decade now. We really miss Principal Cordoba, who brought a sense of calm and diversity o the school. The teachers are great and the whole school community is vibed that we received the 2010 California Distinguished School award this year under Principal Cordoba's and Principal Babbit's leadership. Way to go!

We've had good and bad here. We used to love love love Serrania. Now I can't wait until we are done with Serrania and it makes me very sad. We Love the teachers, We haven't liked a principal since Ms. Babbit, and administration seems disjointed and lacking in various areas. Behavior of kids at this school has gotten way out of control. It is almost like you have to be in an isolated pocket at the school to be protected and free from bullying. The curriculum has taken a backseat to scores, and reading enjoyment has taken a backseat to memorization. My kids used to love school and learning at Serrania and now it is just a chore. Perhaps this is just my experience but it is an experience nonetheless.

An Awesome 5th grade team what a way to end your elementary years All of my children had Mrs. Kerr for K and she is great also you have to keep an open mind all schools like any business go through growing pains and we make the best decisions for the children not the parent. This school has a pheounominal booster club that adds so many wonderful assets to the school I was fotunate enough to be a member and run it for a few years serranias staff did my children more than justice great staff!!!

I am very glad we chose Serrania for my kindergartner last year. We won the open enrollment lottery in 6 Woodland Hills schools, and when a spot opened up for a few children through the child care program, we rushed to Serrania and have not regretted once. I think Serrania's staff, both administration and teachers, is great! It is very clear that they care about the kids and their education. My daughter loves the school and can't wait to start the new school year as a 1st grader in the School for Advanced Studies 'SAS' program. I would recommend Serrania to anyone who has a choice in what school to send his/her child.

Serrania was an amazing program up until this last school year. The new principal clearly wants no input from the staff or parents. Serrania has always been a unique community where staff and parents work together as a team to make the school a safe and warm learning environment. It saddens me to see that this is no longer the school that my children graduated from. I am just grateful that I am no long a part of this community. STAY AWAY! If you can. While the staff is still amazing the principal is not qualified and has the staff so upset that the feel of the school has changed. How very sad.

Serrania keeps getting better. I am so pleased with the positive atmosphere. The new principal has made it a better place. Our children are receiving a well rounded education.

The new principal and kinda-new assistant principal will be fine. Theye are both a departure from what was here in the past; and welcome change. They care about students and staff and parents. HG

This school really hits all the important things needed in a great school. The teacher s care about the students, the principal takes an active interest in each child to help them achieve success inside and outside the classroom, and the classroom instruction is superior to my daughters last LAUSD elementary school. The other highly rated K-5 valley school is well known for the arts and academic achievement but, Serrania's SAS class wins hands down for teaching critical thinking skills, creative writing, science and math. We permitted into Serrania and couldn't be happier. Kudos to the great teachers and staff at Serrania. MZ

Excellent school for both gifted children as well as special needs. Teachers are exceptional, the principal truly cares about the children. Serrania is an 'arts prototype' school exposing children to all types of arts, music, chorus, drama, mine, dance, origami, etc. and all within the regular school day. In additional many after school programs to choose from. Differinated teaching for gifted children is excellent with most of the teachers having 20+ years of teaching experience. The only thing I would like to see improve is the level of parent support. Many a dedicated, but it seems the rest leave it up to a few. Great school overall!

This is my child's second year at Serrania Avenue Elementary and she loves it! After having her Kindergarten teacher as a role model she now declares she wants to be a teacher! It is a charming neighborhood school with beautiful new murals and gardens. It is steadily increasing parent involvement and offers many opportunities to get involved with the school and your child. My younger children can't wait to be old enough to enroll!

Serrania really let my child down. Watch out! Big talkers and bad teachers. They gave the worst to my child who needed the most. They place the best teachers with the gifted kids. Wish I'd left long ago.

Too much demand on students regarding academics. There is no time to be just a kid!

Teachers are burned out! There is too much yelling in the classroom as a technique for discipline by the teachers. More nurturing needs to go on in the upper grade level.

I was a bit worried about sending my child to an LAUSD school (Taft nearby scares me) and had heard Woodland Hills Elementary (aka Bootcamp)would have been the preferred school, but have been absolutely thrilled. My daughter's kindergarten teacher (Mrs. Austin) is amazing and the most effective yet nurturning teacher we have come across. My daughter looks forward to school each and every day and the other kids in her class along with their parents have added to our positive experience. The principal is very enthusiastic and warm, afterschool care has been a wonderful...absolutely no complaints. I'd choose this school over Private School anyday, and we've tried a couple in the area.

My daughter went to this school from k-3rd grade. I would say it is an mediocre school with average teachers. The office staff is efficient, but not at all friendly. They have a decent after school program up to 6pm, but costly.

I have three children in Serrania. All of my children had excellent kindergarden teachers (Stane, Kerr, Sanchez). We had been happy with the 1-4 teachers as well. There are some teachers that really excel. The parent participation is excellent at this school, and is appreciated by the staff. The principal is usually very easy to find and talk with, and is very friendly. The front office staff are all very helpful and friendly.

I like the school for my 4th grader whi is an excellant student. If your son/daughter does not excel in school, this is not the school for you. They have high standards and expect the students to abide to them.

This school has challenged my children to their full potential. Incredible SAS programs. I must say Serrania is one of the top schools. I'm very impressed their Principals Mrs. Babbit and Mrs. Laskin. The teachers are very firm but caring. I am a parent who appreciates that.

Academic programs good. Teachers are great! Limited availability of extracurricular activities. There is a high level of parental involvement. Administration is very accessible, friendly, and helpful. Playground facilities need improvement. The school is older and needs to be updated. Children enjoy Serrania Avenue and seem to get a good elementary school education.

I have had 2 children attend Serrania. They both did well. My 2nd grader is still there. The teachers were always caring and supportive. I had regular access to speak with the teachers when I was able. The principal was a bit difficult, but had her priorities to see the school grow. My children were and are very happy there. They participated in many afterschool activities like homework club, chess club, dance and tennis. The school is very safe, and the afterschool KIDCARE program was well run. I wouldn't recommend it for the holiday/summer though it was too boring for the kids. 5th grade was a very enriched year... many field trips and extra activities.

The 'new' principal has re-invigorated the school! She is one of the hardest working persons I have ever come across. The principal lives for the children at Serrania. The new vice-principal is a terrific support mechanism in all capacities. The campus looks a thousand times better than two years ago (cleaner, new paint, 45 new trees), test scores are up, teachers attitudes are better! There are increased fun, extra-curricular programs and academic assistance. Parent participation has increased we just had our first annual dinner/dance last Autumn as well. Most importantly, my fourth grader loves his teacher and can't wait to go to school in the morning!

I took my son out of a private school and brought him to Serrania and couldn't be happier. His teacher is wonderful and cares about every student. The principal is involved and the students really like her. So far, our experience is that it's a wonderful environment!
