I have a large complaint , the lunch time short and the long extra Extra long lines means half the kinds don't eat or get junk from the Carts . The carts in 2012 carried burritos. Pizza , sandwiches. Now Just snack . Kids are eating nothing to very little then expected to Learn and after school play sports. But I wonder if the money They get for kids who really need their free lunch is given Back when those kids don't get to eat. Take an anonymous survey And see how many students don't get to eat. 2 years now and no fix Concerned mom
PHS has improved a lot over the years and is still improving. No more fights happen at lunch time and the test scores are improving. Great teachers.
I am an alumni of this school from the class of 2008, so this review may be dated as I cannot speak for any improvements which have occurred in the past 4 to 5 years. However, there was much left to be desired when I was a student here. The music program is top notch and many of the clubs and extra curricular activities are excellent. However, the academics and administration was lacking. There was one standard for all students, but all students are not the same. Ultimately the school catered to no one, with accelerated students not allowed to get ahead by too much and struggling students pushed to pursue the same college preparatory coursework (above graduation standards) that the most accelerated students were taking. The school could not keep its leadership for more than a year. Counselors pressured students to pursue a 4-year state college and strongly discouraged other options such as technical careers, liberal arts schools, and community college. My parents had to call the school in order for a counselor not to force me to take a course I did not want or need to take, as it was a "recommended" UC course (not required). Too many of the teachers did not even attempt to teach.
this school is really great with very good teachers and wonderful students. not forgetting the counselors as well.
Great potential, but watch like a halk! PHS just finished its fourth year and second graduation. We had three principals; this year there's another. Disorganization acceptable the first couple of years, but no excuse after that. Newsletters with little meaningful communication (usually late). Parents not told about occurences (even with own child). Ditto academic options. Have to fight for what's fair. Squeaky wheels don't get grease: gotta scream bloody murder. Security is tight and tolerance is low - too much so. Good students overly restricted due to problems of the few. 'Consistency' resulted in suspension for minor offenses. Restrooms were kept locked. Some wonderful, caring, experienced teachers/admin, but too many who don't care or don't know how to overcome the bureaucracy. Most 'middling' students don't get the help they need to do better. Good clubs, sports, music, drama, PTA. Parents must be pro-active! Don't assume teacher/admin knows/does best and all's OK.
