Yosemite Valley School is a wonderful little school. The teachers are dedicated and loving and they all recognize the unique opportunity they have before them. The school is currently K-6, with about 35 students in attendance for a Teacher:Student ratio of about 12:1. The classes are broken into k-2, 3-5 and 6 (?). Although mixed-grade classes, the ratio is so low that the teachers do a fine job with the kids. YVS has the highest standardized test scores in Mariposa County and is a California Distinguished School. The knock on the school is that it is so small that a lot of programs that other schools take for granted simply don't exist. Also, due to the current budget crises, the school has been in danger of getting cut in a misguided attempt by the school district to save money (so far this hasn't happened, but the threat is always there.) Overall a great school with great teachers, a principal who advocates for us during some very hard times. We are very blessed having the opportunity to attend this school.

This is a high quality school with a unique focus on service learning and place based education (we are in Yosemite!). It is a privilege to work at such a forward thinking and committed educational institution. It is an extremely supportive work environment and the students are delightful. When I become a parent I would love to send my students to Yosemite Valley School!

Yosemite Valley School is a small school with teachers committed to engaging students in learning tasks that ask them to be problem solvers and users of technology. We constantly strive to make learning experiences based on real life problems. The school focuses on service learning projects like native plant gardens and public presentations about National Park subjects. Each student is taught at an appropriate level so that they can make the most achievement and feel successful. A program of continuous improvement asks each student to make goals for themselves.

Profile Completeness

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
