Other news or notes
  • High Point Academy is unique in many ways!

    1. We use data teams.

Data teams allow us time to focus exclusively on how we can bring student achievement to the highest level possible. During data team meetings, our teachers analyze how students are performing individually and as a group. Then, they cater their instruction to meet students' needs.

    2. We group our students by performance.

In the essential subjects of reading and math, our students learn at their own level. If they’re behind, they get the instruction they need to catch up. If they’re ahead, they move up to a level that challenges them.

    3. We teach Core Knowledge.

Our students learn more from this content-rich, cumulative curriculum. The Core Knowledge Sequence specifically outlines which skills and content areas must be mastered in every subject for each grade, which avoids repetition and gaps.

    4. We value wellness.

Our award-winning wellness program ensures that our students spend their school hours in a healthy learning environment. We do this not only because healthy kids are better learners, but also because we want to promote healthy habits at a young age, thereby making it easier for our students to make healthy choices as adults.

    5. We make time for P.E.

While many other schools have reduced or eliminated physical education programs, we offer P.E. three times a week.

    6. We start Spanish instruction in Kindergarten.

Our students learn Spanish during weekly classes that start in Kindergarten and continue through eighth grade.

    7. We do service-learning projects.

Our students build character and help communities in need by taking part in different service learning projects every year, starting in Kindergarten.

    8. We offer preschool.

Our Qualistar-rated preschool serves children ages three and up. We have a variety of half-day and full-day programs to meet our families’ needs.

    9. Our parents are involved.

We believe in a family-centered learning environment, which is why we require every HPA family to volunteer 20 hours each school year.

    10. We have SMART Boards in every classroom.

Our interactive technology-based lesson plans engage our students while teaching them the skills they need to be successful in a tech-savvy world.

    11. We have an extended school day.

More time in school means more time for our students to learn. Our school hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., except for Wednesdays, when we have a 2:00 p.m. release in order to allow our staff time to work in data teams.

    12. We require uniforms.

Uniforms enable our students to focus less on outward appearances and more on character and academic achievement.
