mainstreaming: A process by which special education students are placed in regular classrooms. In many cases, students with special needs receive their academic instruction in a Special Day Class, but they are mainstreamed into regular classes for physical education and the arts. Over time, these students might be mainstreamed into academic classes as well, as their skills develop.
