FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GREATSCHOOLS AND DONORSCHOOSE.ORG ANNOUNCE NATIONAL PARTNERSHIP, ENABLING PARENTS TO SUPPORT SCHOOLS IN NEED
NEW YORK, SAN FRANCISCO - November 20, 2008 - GreatSchools and DonorsChoose.org, two nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving education in America, launched a partnership today that will help parents nationwide connect and contribute to classrooms in need.
Beginning immediately, GreatSchools, the independent nonprofit organization that empowers and inspires parents to be involved in their children's education, will now feature classroom project requests from DonorsChoose.org, a Web site where individuals donate to fund specific requests submitted by public school teachers. Visitors to the GreatSchools Web site - www.greatschools.org -- will be presented with classroom needs from the very community in which they have expressed an interest. The range of DonorsChoose.org classroom projects include:
- Balls, nets and goals for a high school girls' soccer team ($500)
- Art easels for adults with special needs ($500)
- A class set of Shakespeare's plays ($300)
- A class field trip to Washington, D.C. to see the Supreme Court consider a case ($2,000)
The partnership builds on the individual success of each of these nonprofit organizations: DonorsChoose.org gives individuals the opportunity to support schools in need by funding specific classroom requests and GreatSchools provides a vast online parent community built over a decade.
"Involved parents lead to successful kids and improved schools, and this initiative will make it easier for parents to improve schools by connecting with teachers and contributing to classroom projects in greatest need of funding," said Bill Jackson, founder and CEO of GreatSchools. "From sponsoring field trips to getting classroom supplies, DonorsChoose.org helps empower and inspire parents to support their children's school and other schools of their choosing. We're excited to partner with DonorsChoose.org because they share our passion for parental involvement in school improvement and have a demonstrated track record of making an impact."
To date, DonorsChoose.org has funded over $25 million in resources and essential classroom learning experiences for 1.5 million public school students across the country.
More than 35 million people visited GreatSchools in 2007, and it has been a source of inspiration and information for parents for 10 years. This partnership is the latest in a series of initiatives to support GreatSchools' overall mission to inspire and empower parents to participate in their children's development and educational success.
In addition to improving U.S. schools by providing funding for vital projects, the GreatSchools-DonorsChoose.org partnership will also help parents teach their children the value of giving.
"We're thrilled to see GreatSchools use our API to feature classroom project requests from DonorsChoose.org," said Charles Best, founder of DonorsChoose.org. "Thanks to the breadth of classroom project requests on DonorsChoose.org, GreatSchools.org will be able to present its national online parent community with needs from public schools in the same city or state. Many thousands of students from low-income families stand to benefit from this partnership."
