School Mission
- The mission of Rufus King International Baccalaureate High School is to accomplish the MPS K-12 goals of excellence by providing a quality college preparatory education to all students.

Instructional Program Highlights
- International Baccalaureate (IB) is an experiential learning program that teaches children how to think critically about causal relationships and examine current accepted scholarship.
- I.B Students write a 4,000 word extended original essay. This is an original research project developed by the students and guided through the use of a faculty advisor. These essays are judged in various disciplines by examiners world wide.
- 88% of all Rufus King Students participate in the I.B. program by taking at least one subject area for college credit. Students who wish to receive their IB diploma, take all six subjects in IB Courses and test at the end of their Junior and Senior years.

- Girls sports: basketball, cheerleading, cross country, soccer, softball, swimming, track and volleyball.
- Boys sports: basketball, baseball, cross country, football, golf, soccer, swimming, tennis, track and wrestling.
- Clubs and extra-curricular activities include: Debate / Forensics - (including Lincoln-Douglass, Policy Debate, and Public Forum Debate) Open to all students; membership fee applies; Drum Line - Open to all students with experience playing the drums; National Honor Society - Students invited based on grades during their sophomore and junior years; membership fee applies; Science Olympiad - Team competition for 22 different events in the sciences, including bridge building and rock identification. No Fee; Gospel Choir - Students perform at school events and travel around the city performing at public competitions and on invitation and Gay-Straight Alliance - Seeks to create a safe environment for LGBT students and their allies through education about LGBT issues.

Parent and Community Support
- There is a very active PTSO (Parent / Teacher / Student Organization) at Rufus King High School. Through this organization, parents participate in the Booster Club and serve on various parent committees. The Rufus King Governance Council is an advisory board to the Principal wich consists of Parents, students, and teachers. Parents are invited to parent activites and encouraged to come to conferences and visit their children's classes.

- Rufus King High School has been named a New Wisconsin Promise School of Excellence for the fifth year in a row. King is one of only 15 schools in the State of Wisconsin that can boast of this accomplishment. According to Newsweek Magazine, Rufus King is ranked first in Milwaukee and in the State of Wisconsin on the rigor index and one of the top 250 high schools in the nation. The International Baccalaureate Program drives the entire culture of the school. All students at Rufus King receive a college preparatory education. We do not offer vocational education classes at King. 88% of our Juniors and Seniors participate in the IB curriculum and test at the end of these years. This participation rate allows Rufus King to have a waiver from the State of Wisconsin for a school year start date around August 15th. The year typically ends around May 30th.

- Recent or upcoming renovations: In 2001, Rufus King High School underwent an $11 Million dollar renovation which added an additional 4 classrooms / science laboratories in a new wing to the building. A new library, administrative suite, three computer labs, and 10 additional classrooms were added. As part of this renovation, $2 Million dollars were included for technological upgrades.
- Gymnasium and physical education facilities: The gymnasium is a spectator style gym where all visitors are seated in the balcony to watch the sporting activities. The gym is often divided through use of a mechanized wall to separate the girls gym from the boys gym. There are four half court basketball hoops and one full court for WIAA games.
- Library facilities: The library was a newly created addition in 2001. Located on the second floor, It boasts it's only computer lab, parent center, and houses meeting space and offices for the Special Education Supervisor and the librarian. There is an abundance of fiction and non-fiction alike housed in the Rufus King library - but only for minimal research. Rufus King has an agreement with UWM for our Full-Diploma IB Candidates to use their research library for the extended essay.
