Smoky Hill is full of all kinds of people. The great thing is, for the most part, they all get along. Being in drama doesn't make you exclusively a drama kid, just as being in IB doesn't really make you a nerd. People meet others and connect with others in all sorts of ways, and cliques really don't exist, at least not in the common sense of the word. Students respect each other for their talents and interests. There are those who aren't involved in anything, who fail their classes, and who are unknown. That is where the school has fault. Also, the school is sharply split by demographic. The African Americans and Hispanics are a large group of people that seem to be apart from the rest of the school, and they do badly. If they are not motivated to do well, Smoky Hill is probably not the best place for them. If your student has hobbies and is planning to join a sport, NHS, IB, AP, or band, drama, orchestra, or choir, they will succeed. Speaking from personal experience, the IB and performing arts environments are two of the best in the school. Both IB kids and performing arts kids support and love each other. I cannot speak as well for the other groups in the school.
My oldest child attended Smoky Hill for 2 years until we relocated. I was satisfied overall with the curriculum and the staff, but would have like to see more study skills presented to the students. The principal is amazing as are the majority of teachers and staff we encountered. The population is diverse, a plus for us, and there is lots of opportunity for student and parent involvement. My only issue with school activities is that everything met on Tuesdays after school, forcing kids to choose only one club or organization to participate in. We had a few issues with bullying but with the help of the deans they were addressed quickly and my child felt safe afterwards.
I went to smoky hill. I learned to smoke cigarettes and weed. The coolest security guards worked there because they would drink alchohol on the job. They let me drop out without even consulting my parents. Of course when your just a number and not on stuco, in IB, or a star athelete, why would they care. I'm a business owner and very successful at that now, no thanks to Smoky Hill. Go Buffs!
Smoky has some of the best teachers and security guards ever, every time i come to class, i want to learn because the teachers are so rad! And don't even get me started on the security guards! The security guards are the most interesting, trustworthy, AWESOME people you will meet, personally, they make Smoky Hill. but the deans are very strict and inconsistent on the dress code.Smoky, IF YOU CAN'T CATCH EVERYONE THAT IS VIOLATING THE DRESS CODE, DON'T CATCH THEM AT ALL PLEASE, its very unfair to those who do get caught.! how does the cleavage of my knees or shoulder effect the learning environment?? Other than that, Smoky is wonderful!
Outstanding school. Amazing school spirit and great traditions. IB and AP programs are exceptional. New renovation looks amazing.
We were unhappy with the level of instruction and the attitude of the staff when trying to work out problems. I pulled my daughter out of the school, and enrolled her in online schooling which may not be perfect but is much better than having her attend Smoky Hill
Im a student at Smoky I am currently a Sophomore 2012! and I have had some of the best years of my life here. The AVID program is excellent probably best west of the Mississippi and it is just all a fun environment, teachers know what they are doing and everyone has a sense of pride to be a buffalo.
Excellent school, amazing teachers, opportunities for all types of students. I can't wait for my youngest son to be a buffalo!
Awesome! Must join the AVID program for your student I would not be here if it wasnt for My AVID teacher. The school is something I will always remember the memories made there.....
Smoky hill has been everthing I ever expected for our childrens education, I have two student that graduated from smoky and one on the way to graduate. the one thing that seems to stand out the most about smoky is that it is a controlled environement, where staffs always knows whats goin on.
Its an awesome school! Everyone has so much school pride. Academic programs really push students to succeed. Students and parents will love it!
I was a student in Smoky Hill High. It was a great school academically ; however, discipline was of small priority with in the school system. I noticed that kids were more interested in messing around than actually behaving in the class. Kids would always complain on how the school is so strict. It seems they don't have the where with all to understand why she continuous to tighten the leash on the student body.
Smoky Hill is a great school. The teachers are really nice and understand the students' needs and concerns. We are a tight knit school now more than ever. Sure, we have drama at times but what school doesn't? Everyone here gets along no matter what your race, religion or ethnic background. Its a great school to attend. I personally look forward to each and everyday of my education, and attending Smoky Hill is a big part of why I do.
I am a parent who has had two boys graduate from Smoky Hill High School. 2004 and 2006. My oldest received 21 credits entering college through Advanced Placement exams in 2004/2005. He also was in several musicals and plays, and sang in several choirs. My youngest was in the Automotive classes which he loved and was in Track and Field. The parent involvement is outstanding. My only concern about Smoky(this is also across the board at all Cherry Creek schools) is that as long as there is no problems your children do very well, as soon as there is a problem, most of the educators suddenly are not available.
Smoky Hill has opened doors for me that I had never dreamed of prior to enrollment. The best aspect of Smoky Hill is the multitude of options. A student can chose to take regular classes, some AP classes, some honors classes, or all IB classes. Smoky allows a one to succeed in any path taken. The IB program can provide one with a better education than any other program at any other school in the district. From a parenting perspective, Smoky has made recent renovations (powerschool, freshman seminar, closed campus policy for freshman) to ensure support for students and allow parent participation. Ms. Brown, the principle, is an amazing woman and effective leader. There are enough extracurricular activities to satisfy any student's curiosity. The recent implementation of the block system of classes is the only fault of this school. The block system hurts students struggling to learn, while favoring higher achieving students.
This school is crap, the other day my friend was approached by 3 other students. One of them pulled a knife and my friend defended him self before the knife user could strike, breaking the attacker's knee with his martial arts training. My friend got expelled because the kid with a knife didn't strike first?! What was my friend supposed to do? Sit there and wait to get shanked? He couldn't run as he was cornered. The kid with a knife was expelled as well but his expulsion didn't go on record, but my friend's did. Speaking as a former student, when I attended this craptastic school, I had a counselor named Mr. Kantor talk me into dropping out. Then went on boasting about the 'No child left behind act'.
There seams to be no structure to the classes, and appears to be hap hazard. I do not in any form like the way the class schedules are done. The 2 time a week class then 3 times a week for next week, is both confusing for parents but the student as well. They are not learning enough in that short amount of time. I would like for the students to return to the old ways where they had daily contact with each and every teacher, for a time period of no less than 50 min. every day. I do not like the fact that my children do not have a set time to be in school every day, start at 0700 end 1530 or so I feel it should be. Thank you for your time.
The best tool a parent can have is called Power School. This tool can let you know his grades every day to what assignments are due and the grades on them. Every grade level every school should have this tool. It's the best thing.
Best high school out there, very diverse, great kids, high test schores, and the IB program for accelerated kids.
Smoky Hill High School, is a decent school with great academics. While it can't beat Cherry Creek with CSAP scores, it still is better than other schools in the district. It also has a wide range of sports and clubs.
