Overall, my daughter has had a great kindergarten experience at this school. I really like the positive behavior program Deer Creek uses (SOAR).
Wow what a school. Starting with one of the greatest principles I have ever met...wish he would have been mine. Then the staff with only a few exceptions make a wonderful team they are well on there way to making DCES one of the best in the state. Then you throw in the parents. There is not a day that goes by that there are not at least a handful of parents wondering the halls doing things everywhere. From stuffing folders to laminating art work. What a great team !!!!
The staff at Deer Creek work hard to meet the needs of all of the students. Teachers are trained in methods to differentiate instruction and establish a positive learning environment. There are many teachers who consistently go 'above and beyond' which in turn creates happy, productive students at all grade levels. As a parent, my choice is Deer Creek because students can excel at their own pace. I also feel the positive behavior support program helps to recognize students who are model citizens of their school community. It's a great school.
This is a public school, meaning all kids at all levels should be given the opportunity to reach their academic potential. How wonderful for the parents who have children that just 'get it' easier than others. Sadly, our experience is that teachers at this school do not recognize all students strengths. Better efforts are necessary to reach every student on the bell-shaped curve and not just part of it. It's no wonder there is so many that homeschool from this district.
My daughter was a new student at Deer Creek this year, having come from a very prestigious school for gifted children. We are very impressed with Deear Creek and it's principal! My child has dissected 4 organs, attended several educational assemblies, and been exposed to many different types of literature, as well as accelerated grade levels in math, science, and literacy. This little public mountain school is far more impressive than the elite school she was previously attending!
Despite this schools rating, it unfortunately for parents who have children with different learning abilities, does not adequately meet the needs of all children in a respectful, professional, and sensitive manner. There is a desperate need for some staff training when it comes to recognizing that children respond to different teaching techniques. Instead there exists a very narrow-minded perspective that one size fits all. Hopefully, this perception will improve so it can truly reflect its rating.
Deer Creek has made some excellent changes in the last 2 years, the best being their principal. He is very caring of his staff and students and has made significant improvements. They are stepping up curriculum and expectations, to take this wonderful little school to the next level. Deer Creek recently was awarded an excellent rating as well! Everyone is so friendly and welcoming.
