Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

My child went to Heatherwood Elementary, 1st and 2nd grade. He has ADHD and Tourettes, with this comes certain behaviors that they did not want to deal with. The 1st grade teacher handled this very well, the 2nd was too overwhelmed. Their was students that said there was yelling in the class. My son went into a depression because it was too much for him to handle. Talk to Principle and he thought it was a disciple problem, which his doctor in a report said that was not the case. I pulled my son out of school and put him in a private school. The depression is alot better 6 months later and he is doing well in his new school. He has A's and 1 B..Also his behavior has improved because he is now confident and could read.

Heatherwood is a small community oriented school with great teachers, families, administrators, and kids. The teachers my kids have had are top notch. You can tell that the teachers have a love for teaching! I am proud to send my kids to a school like Heatherwood. The small neighborhood feel creates a harmonious community and parents are heavily involved in the success of the school. The new principal is focused on taking Heatherwood from a good school to a GREAT school and remains very clear with his strategies and ambitions. He is open and present and is a strong leader.

I am very proud to be a part of the Heatherwood School community. We have very dedicated and caring staff and community. Our new Principal has brought a fresh vision to our school. Through focus and by maximizing our support staff, we have been able to restructure the school day so EVERY child can thrive, not matter what level they are currently performing at. Heatherwood has a strong community. There is great parent support in the classroom, library and throughout the building. With the parent support the teachers and paras can best focus on the kids education. Heatherwood also host the Intensive Learning Center (ILC) which provides support for kiddos with special needs. The support team for these special needs kids is outstanding at Heatherwood. The school works very hard to include the special need students into the main stream classroom and activities. Though progress has been made in providing for these kids, I feel there is more education and awareness that needs to be communicated to all. Creating a more compassionate society, one person at a time. Overall I feel very lucky to be a part of such a great school community.

We've been part of this neighborhood school for 3 years with kids in the "lower pod" (K-2). It's a welcoming place, with mostly kind and laid-back parents who are engaged. Teachers, at least in the lower pod, have been invested, nurturing and care about the well being of each child. It is an open-classroom setting (with partitions instead of solid walls), if you are wary of that I can say my child who has auditory issues has done absolutely fine and noise-level/distractions are manageable. As with many schools, more and more is becoming expected with less, therefore parental volunteering is essential--there are many opportunities from counting Box Tops to volunteering to assist w/reading and math, to helping in PE, Art; strong and varied PTO activities, etc. Emphasis on health such as walk/bike to school events, the Heather Heatherwood fun run, a salad bar at school with veggies from our garden, plus fun events like movie night outdoors, etc. It is truly a neighborhood school with opportunities to help build community, which I appreciate in ways that extend beyond pure academics.

I love the small community of Heatherwood. There are great parents, teachers and leadership at this school. Since the new principal started in 2012, there has been a lot of improvements to safety and academic standards. I can only see this school getting better under this new leadership.

The best thing about Heatherwood is the highly dedicated staff! Each teacher truly cares about it's students success. Heatherwood has recently had a new principal. The new principal has made several steps to create a peaceful environment for all students. He is also very serious about raising the academic growth in the school. My 2 children really enjoy going to Heatherwood and have never once complained about going to school!

Heatherwood Elementary is a smaller neighborhood school with an amazing community. Our school focuses on whole child growth and helps the children to really learn responsibility, respect, perseverance, and peacefulness. We have many optional community building events throughout the year. The teachers are all wonderful and have a passion for teaching, they welcome parent involvement and do an awesome job of keeping you informed.

Heatherwood is an awesome neighborhood school. We hired a new principal last year and he has been a very positive leader. The staff works well together and are all very talented in engaging the children in learning. The community is very welcoming and we are a small enough school it makes it easy to know one another. I have been a parent at this school for 7 years and I still have 6 years ahead of me! Couldn't be happier!

Heatherwood is an amazing school and I'm so happy to be a part of this community. There are many wonderful teachers and staff at Heatherwood. The teachers really know how to get their students to work their hardest. The music, art and gym programs are great. One of my favorite events is the Science Fair. Most of all, I love the wonderful sense of community at Heatherwood. I wouldn't send my kids to any other school. Go Huskies!!!

Heatherwood elementary is a wonderful neighborhood school. As an engineer, I am really happy that they offer a Math Club called "Mathletes" to grades 1-5. This program is sponsored by the parent teacher organization (PTO). The school has given our kids a love of learning. They also love to go to school!

New upper pod teachers and a new energetic principal in 2011 improved this already wonderful neighborhood school. Great test scores. Lots of parent involvement and a few wonderful quiet neighborhoods to raise your kids away from the bustle of urban Boulder. A lot of the parents and teachers are native to Boulder. Surrounded by open space and one of the first 8 schools to be partially solar powered by BVSD.

This is an okay school. Positives are the caring, positive environment, nice office staff and principal. My child likes going to school. Negatives are: not focused on academic excellence, eg, teaches to the middle or even the bottom, not particularly strong leadership to address waning 4th grade math scores, a reward/punishment based discipline/character program that is very ineffective for kids, like another person posted here. There are many, many activities for parents to be involved with, but unfortunately, none of those seem to be academic in nature. Far too much focus on food/social activities. Poor communication from classroom about academics, behavior, activities. Very short notice for sometimes 2 or 3 parent involvement activities per week, which is very hard for working parents and makes these kids feel their parents are not there for them. Warm and fuzzy, but not a great school.

My Child attended this School. The Principal has no leadership skills. Unable to deal with any conflict. Parents run the School and are wonderful. Teacher moral is low with a lame leader. Had some Great teachers, also some very unmotivated ones. My advice look at open enrollment, Private School.

I love the community focus. Heatherwood has great academics, don't get me wrong, but our neighborhood is kind of out in the middle of nowhere and Heatherwood Elementary has also become a social focus of the neighborhood. Heatherwood is a very green school, and are teaching our children how to be green by example and by practice. In addition to great academics, Heatherwood's wonderful educators teach and promote tolerance for others, good life skills, and help our kids to look at how they can contribute to their community. It's a great place for children to grow into solid, contributing members of society, and they have a lot of fun along the way!

Heatherwood is a great community school. The teachers and staff are wonderful and really care about the children. My child wakes up every morning happy and excited to go to school, which I feel is a true testament to the wonderful job the teachers are doing. They have open classrooms and it amazes me how focused the children are despite not having walls. The children learn in fun and interesting ways and my daughter is constantly talking about what she learned each day.

This school has such a great sense of community where many families know and support each other. This school actively support many activities such as 'Walk and Roll' where students with families, teachers, etc get physical exercise while getting to/from school. The cafeteria has healthy food choices. The principle is a kind/caring individual who actively is involved with the well being of all students/faculty. This school has proven that it enabled students to be prepared for middle school and beyond.

Heatherwood Elementary School is a wonderful school for many reasons. The dedicated staff is caring, compassionate, willing and extremely competent. There are programs available to encourage learning outside the classroom like 'mathletes', the learning fair and the science fair. Also, there are plenty of volunteer projects and community service opportunities for students to learn the importance of giving back. We are a 'green' school and allow many choices to help continue this by recycling, cutting down on paper usage and 'walk and roll' week, where students are encouraged to find alternative ways to get to and from school. The best thing about our school is that the parents are very involved and it feels like a community. It is a terrific school and we are thankful our children are lucky enough to attend.

Heatherwood's principal, teachers, para-educators and staff are the best any parent and child can ask for. Compared to schools that I have been involved with in the past, there was always someone telling you which teacher you should hope to get or to hope you don't get. In Heatherwood, any teacher you get, you know they are going to be a wonderful and caring teacher and that your child is going get a great education. They are very dedicated to our children and it's an awesome community that I'm proud to be a part of.

This is an absolutely awesome school. The sense of community is great. The school is right in the center of an older community, and many of the families live here, walk their kids to school, talk, hang out, have playgroups and get-togethers. It is a great place to live and learn. The teachers are so friendly and know all of the kids by name. The school has open class rooms, it recycles, has recently changed their lunch menu to a much healthier alternative (with salad bar). I can't say enough good things about Heatherwood Elementary. Our kids just love it, and so do we!

The teachers/staff/principal are wonderful, caring people, and my kids just love to go to school. The school is also a ecocycle Green Star school, a recipient of SRTS grant funding to encourage kids to ride/walk to school, and offers great after school activities for kids, including intramurals and HW University.

We have an incredible community of families, teachers and admin that put children first. Everyone goes the extra step to make sure that all kids have a nurturing, safe, and challenging enviroment to learn and grow. Our school educates all aspects of a child... the emotional, social, athletic, artistic, musical and intellectual. Our principal is very involved in the daily goings on of the school and knows every child by name. We have many social events for families throughout the year. It is a very close knit community of friends and family. My children love going to school and at the end of the day that is what is important.

The sense of community at our school is amazing!People get along and support each other. Our faculty really care about the students and their families. Our parents really care about the teachers. I have 2 kids who are in (have been in Heatherwood) my oldest just moved to middle school this year and I can't say enough about our school. We had the opportunity to go to private and charter schools and we chose Heatherwood because of the outstanding academic opportunities, the good balance of art/music & athletics that are still so important at our school! Bonus, it's our neighhood public school! Win/win in our book! As well as being a distinguised school academically, our kids are taugh to give back and care for our environment. We have many community service activities and we are one of a handful of Green Star schools, partnering with Eco-Cycle to build a model Zero Waste community at our school. Great kids are coming out of this school!

Heatherwood has provided exactly the right type of education for my kids. They receive individual attention when they need it, feel pride in their school and schoolmates, they learn respect for themselves and others. I notice the commitment of teachers, parents and administration working in partnership to create a great experience for kids. The focus and priorities are connected to the community. They use technology appropriately and give kids the opportunity to excel. I trust they would use the funds awarded to make Heatherwood even better.

this school had the opportunity to become truly Great when Horizons teachers spent hours endeavoring to train them as William Glasser, Alfie Kohn and Gardener would teach. Alas, they did not implement the suggestions and they remain an ordinary, 'good' elementary school. I personally would not choose this school for my child- there is too much emphasis on rewards/punishments, lack of parent involvement and a lack of student self-governance.

My son entered kindergarten at Heatherwood mid year. He was doing fairly well at his previous school, but his new teacher told me he didn't know any of his basics. They were saying he had a possible cognitive problem or ADD. I actually started to believe them. I took him to Sylvian Learning Center. Three weeks after being at Sylvian he could read, do math and knew all of his letters and numbers. I pulled him out of Heatherwood to homeschool, it has been about seven weeks and now he reads at above a first grade level. I found out other kids were bullying him and nothing was being done to stop it, no wonder he couldn't concentrate. I am disgusted with this school, and especially his pm kindergarten teacher. I would not recomend this school to anyone.
