Bixby preschool has an excellent play-based learning model with loving and compassionate staff. My children have learned science, math, reading and writing skills without spending anytime at a desk. The playground, swimming pool, music and gym programs round out the child's experience and allow for fewer extra curricular activities to shuttle your kiddos (to). The lunches prepared on site by chef Mary are amazing. With before and after-school care, as well as excellent summer programs, Bixby is the best choice in town for working parents.
The upper grades at this school are thriving, but one can't help but notice the declining enrollment in the early elementary years. The funding gap this creates is noticeable. The facilities are in decline and the learning environment (split into many small classrooms, sometimes divided only by curtains or cubicle walls) feels disorganized. The school does have a niche in providing knowledgable emotional support for 2E kids. But, the environment itself seems counter to what most 2E kids need.
I've really enjoyed seeing my son thrive at Bixby School. He enjoys all the small group setting, the independent time his schedule allows and time with friends, playing outside. He has struggled with the number of classes and transitions that are part of daily life at Bixby for 1st - 5th graders. Some teachers, as in all schools, are more experienced in the classroom. It seems difficult, with the frenetic setting, for teachers to manage the ever changing tide of children that they see throughout the day. It becomes a bit catch-as-catch-can without forethought into curriculum day to day. I do so appreciate the small group setting for each class, but after some time I can see where the model doesn't work for all children. He misses having a single classroom and one main teacher. We don't want to take him away from friends, but are considering moving due to the drawbacks of this model.
We are very impressed with the school. Our kids are in the Preschool program and they LOVE going to school. The teachers are awesome and sensitive to the child s needs. They focus on developing the child s personality in areas where the child really need help. The biggest difference between this school and others we have been at is that the teachers really understand your child and work on addressing their needs. The preschool director is very involved in the day to day activities and has been very receptive to our needs. Overall, we just love this school!
Bixby school is a terrific place. I have been so impressed with both their preschool and elementary programs. I have found the teachers to be both well prepared and well supported. They have an amazing focus on community across the age span. This school has a well-deserved reputation for working with gifted and "twice exceptional" children. I have a child who falls into the "2e" category and the staff at Bixby have been unfailingly committed to understanding my child and helping her develop in both areas of strength and challenge. Over the past year, there has been some transition in leadership. I have been impressed with the school board's commitment to making this go as smoothly as possible. A secondary, but wonderful benefit of Bixby is their terrific grounds and support of physical development. I would highly recommend this school.
My three children have all attended Bixby, the eldest of which is a graduate and now attends a public high school. Our experiences at Bixby, and subsequently in public schools, have provided us with some perspective as to why Bixby is so special. In my view, Bixby has offered my children a uniquely valuable education. The philosophy of the school is motivated by the results of a broad array of educational research so as to optimize its learning environment. It emphasizes age-appropriate skills and teaches well beyond worksheets and texts to encourage curiosity and instill a love of exploration. Due to its exceptionally low student/teacher ratio, it is also in a unique position to teach students in a manner catered to their individual learning styles and needs. The focus of Bixby is not just on academic skills, though it does cover those thoroughly, but on the interpersonal and emotional skills that are essential for success in middle school and beyond. Bixby's evaluation methods are incredibly comprehensive and I've heard many parents gain new insights into their own children from teacher parent conferences. Bixby is a model for other schools to follow.
We were lucky enough to find Bixby (through a referral) and enrolled in the last open spot in preschool! The preschool was amazing. My son came home every day talking about his friends, the activities, the pool and especially the tasty lunch. This was not the case at our previous preschool! Since everything was going so well for son, we decided to stay on through elementary (which is tough since Boulder schools are great) and boy are we glad we did! We saw families leave public school starting in 2nd when their kids weren't challenged. Not a problem at Bixby!! The VERY small class sizes are unique and teachers that are totally in tune with your kid's learning. Probably the most profound experience for our family has been the series of annual rubric evaluations that Bixby does for each student. It is hard to describe what an in-depth process this is. You get ~9 pages of intimate detail on your child's growth (social, academic) and attention you never dreamed a school could provide. Sending our kids to this school was financially a big decision for our family, but it has paid immense dividends in over the years. Our education expectations were exceeded by Bixby.
The teachers at Bixby were able to take our highly-gifted, sensitive child, and encourage his curiosity and energy. He has blossomed into an energetic, engaged kid, and has made so many wonderful friends. Bixby is as much of a family as a school, with a very non-pretentious environment for a private school. The teacher student ratio is so favorable that the teachers know our child in many ways as deeply as we do, and they are able to teach and guide him on a very individual level. Our son is doing algebra in 3rd grade! Every lesson is taught to the level of each individual student, so they are always appropriately challenged. I wish I could have gone to Bixby.
Bixby School is uniquely AMAZING. We transferred our son in 2nd grade. Within a month of him arriving at Bixby, it was clear to us that every single teacher who taught him knew him as a person and a learner better than he had ever been known at his previous school. Whenever we have a question about what he is learning, what we can do to support him and how he is developing as a person (does he treat others well? challenge himself?) we know there is someone who is available and knows our son well enough to answer our questions. At the same time his skills in writing, social studies and math SKYROCKETED - he is challenged and LOVES learning. Instead of feeling like our son had to fit into school, Bixby figures out how school can meet our son where he is. I believe his entire experience of school is forever changed for the better - he simply LOVES school.
We came to Bixby after K and 1st in a public school. We couldn't be happier with our decision. The teachers are excellent. The class sizes are small and cater to each child's needs. The Bixby culture is all inclusive. All kids are friends. No cliques like the public school we had our son in. It's a very nurturing creative environment, we LOVE it.
After a very unsuccessful 1st and 2nd grade in public school, my daughter moved to Bixby. It was a joy to see her thriving, even after just one week. It's fundamentally changed how my daughter thinks about school and in one year she made up a lot of lost ground. She can't get lost in the mix. Small class sizes allow teachers to work with kids at a variety of levels and get to know what works and what makes the kids tick. Lower yard and swimming, along with moving between rooms throughout the day means she gets a great outlet for burning excess energy. The Director and the lead teacher were open, listened to my thought about my child, and worked together to brainstorm on what the next steps were. I can't wait to see what my daughter achieves over the couple of years. She always loved learning....now she has a place she loves to learn at.
Our son attended Bixby School from K until 4th and had to leave because of moving to another state. He loved every day he was at this school especially the backyard and swimming classes. The school has a curriculum that enriches the creativity in each child. We had our hesitations from time to time because of the no homework, no test policy but it turns out that our son was so well prepared by Bixby that he had no challenge to adjust to a school with an academically challenging curriculum with tests and homework when we moved out of Colorado. He understands each and every subject easily no matter how difficult the subject is and as parents we think this has strong ties with his background he gained at Bixby. In short, Bixby does not only teach subjects to your child, but they leave a permanent effect on your child to crave lifelong learning. On the social side, we found Bixby experience very valuable as they instill values in each child to become responsible, respectfull and sensible. We highly recommend this Bixby School.
Bixby has been excellent for our child in every way. Like many students, he was at another private school for pk/k, and then in our local school for first grade. That was OK, but in second grade things started to fall apart. Fortunately Bixby had a seat available, and we were able to transfer mid-year. We were expecting some transition issues, both to a new school and away from the old, but saw neither. He was accepted in to the new class seamlessly, and he never did ask about his old school outside of an occasional observation about how much he likes his new one. The glaringly positive aspects of Bixby are the dedicated schedules and classrooms for each subject, the motivated/enthusiastic/creative teachers, and small class sizes with engaged students. The curriculum and focus are exactly where we want them, on the children now and for the future.
Awesome school for quiet, deliberate, and thoughtful students. My sensitive child LOVES this school. We are so glad to have him enrolled at Bixby - our third school we've tried for him. The class sizes are so small - around six students to one teacher. A perfect environment to draw out a hesitant child. Plus, hot lunch and swimming lessons in their onsite pool are included in the tuition. Our experience at Bixby has exceeded all our expectations. Don't just tour the school - ask to sit in on a couple of classes - you will be sold too.
We enrolled our son after a Montessori school and a year of public school. While not a special needs child, our son thrives in small groups and needs engagement. We have found an amazingly dedicated staff that brings learning to life for our son. From the amazingly small class sizes and the focus on critical thinking from first principles to the emphasis on "play" instead of homework, we believe we have found a school that sets our son up with the skills and creative environment that will serve him well throughout his life.
We chose Bixby after several disappointing experiences at other schools. Our son is very intelligent, but the busy, "one size fits all" atmosphere of other schools was difficult for him. The staff and teachers at Bixby are amazing, sensitive and highly skilled. In a short time, I felt they could intuit my son's needs as well as I can. Bixby is a safe and fun place for him, and for the first time, he can't wait to go to school everyday. We are beyond impressed.
We had a terrible experience with this school. We found it militaristic despite its claim to foster critical thinking skills. A very punitive, rigid environment. Our child completely fell apart there. Teachers were cruel and didn't seem to like children or be sensitive to needs to the point that it really frightened us for our child's well being. He completely returned to himself after leaving there. Would not recommend to anyone. Yes, our child loved the pool. He said "I miss the pool, even though the teachers were evil." Out of the mouths of babes.
This school is great for the highly gifted. They have responded rapidly and proactively (without requests by me) to keep my son challenged and help him grow to be well rounded.
I sent my three children to Bixby starting in preschool (I now have one graduate and two in the elementary) and they all had a great experience. I loved the way that the preschool focused on teaching them a love for learning and I have seen this develop in them throughout their experience there and beyond. My eighth grader now attends an academically rigorous charter school, and he is at the top of his class. Every child develops at a different pace, and I really love the way that Bixby works with children to teach them how to learn in a way that makes sense to them and that will stick with them throughout their lives.
My husband and I enrolled our son in the Preschool program. At the time, it seemed to be a great fit for us, caring and involved teachers were at hand everyday to welcome our little one. By the time of our sons' last year, we realized that the Preschool program did not introduce enough literacy activities to the children, and talking to other parents, we all realized our children were lagging behind compared to other programs. How could this be? Our children were not challenged or even pushed to trace letters or do number recognition! Very disappointing experience, we paid quite a price tag and the preschool didn't deliver literacy skills...I found myself spending all summer working with my son at home just for him to catch up...and, I am not the only parent to think this. So, we are doing public school now and are happy about it.
