My daughter attended Watershed School from grades 6-12. She enrolled when the school was just 2 years old. There were bumps in the road but she received a good education and developed close relationships with some teachers. The travel component of Watershed School instilled in her a love of international travel and a sense of global citizenship. She currently attends an excellent private college. That said, I only rated a 3 because the school continually had problems with leadership and student culture/community to the point of serious dysfunction. In their quest to have a meaningful community, staff members often micromanaged students relationships and interactions, frequently based on the words of one person. The kids at times described the atmosphere as oppressive and stifling. Meanwhile students do get bullied, ostracized and develop cliques and mean behavior at Watershed. Additionally Watershed School often turned a blind eye to the behavior of students whose parents had deep pockets. Watershed talks an excellent line about community. They have the academics nailed as far as I am concerned but need to really work on the community piece.
We are so thrilled that our son attends Watershed School. He is thriving in its expeditionary learning environment. He has attended private schools since pre-K, with the exception of one horrible year at a public charter school, and Watershed is one of the best schools we as a family have experienced. The staff at Watershed are committed to academic excellence, yet teach in a way that is fun, engaging, and is natural to learning. The field trips, group and peer work, small class size, and exceptional teachers and administration make this an innovative and great school.
I finally had the courage to switch my child to Watershed from a private K-12 school in Lafayette (that, sadly, had bullying issues and a mean culture). We are SO HAPPY we made the move. She loves her new (kind, smart, and funny) friends at Watershed and her new teachers! No more memorizing and regurgitating. No more cliques, gossip, prank calls, name-calling and nonsense. She is growing here. She's learning here. And, she LOVES learning here. I highly recommend this school!
The Watershed School has a great program. Being an experiential school the kids are learning in and out of the classroom. This hands on learning is so valuable. The kids learn to think things through and support their opinions. The teachers are supportive and encouraging. The kids work in groups often amd have great social skills. We are thrilled our kids have the opportunity to go to Watershed.
This is an awesome school. My son left another private school in the area in the middle of the year because of the mean culture of the students at the school. He is thriving at this school. The students treat each other with respect and caring. The academic environment is excellent; it is not the usual sit at a desk and get lectured at. It encourages kids to look at the world around them and how they fit in. My son is filled with passion about the subjects he studies.
