This school has been wonderful for my child. I really have no complaints, however some changes I would like to see are, less children in the preschool and a NEW teacher for the 1-4grade. The preschool seems a little overwhelming at times with upward of 30 kids. The teacher for grades 1-4 is a retired school teacher with many years of experience, however hardly any patience (rightfully so at 75yo).
Tonight my son's school hosted a Parent Education class on nutrition, covering how to read labels and identify ingredients in food, what effects additives and dyes have on children and how to choose healthy foods within a budget. At the same time we were learning about nutrition, our children were watching a puppet play about good food choices and participating in an activity that showed them how eating fruits and vegetables gave them more energy to play and learn. Everyone--kids and grown-ups--left munching samples of healthy foods. I can't wait for the class the school is offering (free of charge) on "Making Parenting a Pleasure" to start next week! I really like how MeadowLark Montessori not only does a great job of teaching the basics but also cares about making families within our community stronger and more connected.
You cannot beat five to one attention compared to public schools (Second Creek) 32 kids per class.
Today, 4/22/08 is Meadowlark Montessori's 2nd annual Earth Day Celebration. Today at our school, the children planted 10 trees in our community. The elementary students hand sewed reusable canvas tote bags designed to replace plastic grocery bags. The students have sold 53 of them to date to interested parents. The money will be used to purchase recycling bins for paper and aluminum and a sewing machine for their classroom. This effort is a great illustration of environmental awareness for the children. I think this school has great ideas and is good at teaching respect of and responsible stewardship of our planet.
