This is my granddaughters first year at Colorado Springs Charter Academy. So far, it has been great. She had a wonderful review during parent/teacher conference and part of it is because she likes her teacher and she even enjoys wearing a uniform to school. Her teacher has done a great job in stressing the need to finish homework and to bring it back! Making the student responsible for their homework is a good starting point to learn how important their education is. The only improvement is the need for a great air conditioning unit installed for our hot summer days!
The problem with CSCA in my opinion is poor administration and an extremely high turn over rate for teachers. My kids went there for three years, but we could see the handwriting on the wall. Every time they found a teacher they (and we) liked, the teacher would end up leaving. Some of them in the middle of the year.. When speaking with a couple of teachers that were leaving, I seemed to get the same answer as to why: they were not treated with respect, asked to work long hours without being paid, and felt a general lack appreciation. It's too bad, because the school has some wonderful qualities including a great curriculum, and a super location. Until some changes are made at the top however, I couldn't recommend it to friends or family.
CSCA is a place where kids can be kids and also get the education and character development they are going to need for their futures. This is our second year there and we couldn't be happier!
This is our first year and so far we love it. I am very impressed with how helpful the students are. There is always someone ready to hold open a door- they are great citizens. My daughter loves her teacher and I feel a genuine concern from the teachers and school leaders alike.
My daughter just completed her first year here. We are both very happy with it! She has learned so much this year and she learned it in a way that was fun and rewarding for her. Her teacher was wonderful and caring, all of the administrative staff has been very nice and supportive. The overall school climate is friendly. We are looking forward to many more years here!
This was my child's first year here. While it is a decent school focused on academics, I don't feel like enough focus is put into the children on a personal level. I would like the staff as a whole, to be on a more intimate level with the kids. I feel like the main focus is grades, scores, and pushing your child above their limit, but I don't feel like they connect on an intimate level, which I think is necessary. I also feel like I'm not told what all goes on in the classroom - my child has to complain to me about being bullied/made fun of and I have to bring it up to the teacher myself to even be told about it more. I don't feel like the student(s) doing the bullying are really being held accountable for their actions, but rather getting away with it - esp. when it's something that goes on almost every day. I feel like this school is disorganized and not sure which direction it's headed towards, but hopefully it will take a step forward. I am going to allow my child to attend next year, but if I keep seeing the same issues and I'm still not 100% satisfied, I will probably place my child elsewhere. This school definitely needs improvement.
Our daughter has attended CSCA since 1st grade. She's now in 4th grade. I'm very distressed at the turnover rate of the teachers here. In her four years here she's had six teachers. In addition, her grades have been going downhill. She was an A-B student and now she's a B-C student. We tutored her ourselves one summer after the grade drop and turned to professional tutors the summer after that. Our appeals to the school have gone unheeded throughout all of this. It is equivalent to pulling teeth to simply get the teacher to speak with us about what is going on with her in the classroom. We have no idea if she is paying attention or goofing off during class. We want to help but are blocked at every attempt. We are currently looking for a school that will be more parent-friendly next year.
We have been very pleased with CSCA during our 3 years there! In fact we transfered our eldest son from a "high" ranking D-11 school in the middle of 1st grade due to a lack of learning, discipline & leadership in his classroom there. While at CSCA he has excelled to become an A student. We love that they have higher standards for our boys education than any other school in our area. I love that they hold my kids accountable for their actions/behavior, they are constantly challenging them in the classroom, and require parental involvment in a variety of ways. Both of my kids are excelling in school and even learning above their grade level in areas. I am eagerly awaiting sending my 3rd son there in 2011-2012.
I had my children here for three years and unfortunately this school is going the wrong way. Students are treated like little robots, they do not let them express themselves, and the love and logic program puts all the weight ion the children, even errors made by teachers little children have to find out ways to fix them.... It is sad how staff preten to be one thing infornt of parents, but int he classrooms is something else...your children will not be children in this school, they are expected to be little adults...how sad
This is our first year here and we are so pleased! It is structured and focused, and the parental involvement (40 hours required yearly) makes a definite impact! Coming from another charter school that was extremely disorganized and chaotic, this school definitely sets the bar for what a charter (or any) school should be. I'm so thankful to be here, and I know my children are receiving a top-notch education here delivered by an extremely caring and professional staff.
My wife and I believe that a quality education is one of the most important gifts you can give your children. We found that a CSCA. The quality of staff, teachers, curriculum, and the commitment to the students could not be higher. At CSCA they teach values and morals that mirror our lives. We love the fact that parents are encouraged to play an active role in the school through volunteering in the classroom, library, PTO, school board, committees, and more. It truly does take a community to raise a child and that s what you find at this school, community. I wish every child had the opportunity to attend a school of this caliber and receive the education needed to build a quality future. Foundations to success begin with education and I can t think of a better place to start then at this school.
I absolutely LOVE this school! They are patriotic, teach virtues of character, teach accountability and responsibility. They are 100% dedicated to invest in the children to become responsible, well educated, moral citizens of this great nation. They are balanced, teaching from core of knowledge! Love the principle!!!
I am raising my three grandchildren & they all attend this great school. The curriculum is excellent. The 'Love & Logic' problem solving is the best. The children are expected to do their best & to be accountable for all they do, both good & not so good. I am so glad this school is here for these kids & I support the staff to the max!
We have been very disappointed recently. To sum it up, academic results are more important to the staff than anything else. It has crushed our childrens spirit.
I love this school! My three boys began attending school at CSCA in 2008. I am a single mom, working, and going through nursing school. When we first became a part of this school last year, my family was just overcoming many devastating situations. My oldest son was having a difficult time coping. CSCA helped him in everyway they could. To make a long story short, CSCA took us in, as a family in crisis, and gave us the proper support. The people who make up this school are a major reason why today all three of my children are not only succeeding in school but are doing better over over all. They love going to school there and feel like an important part of the community. The teachers, counselor, principle, and the support staff have all taken the time to meet my boys' needs in very individualized ways.
It's interesting for me to read reviews from parents who are dissatisfied with how CSCA is run, as the road map for the school is thoroughly defined in the school charter. Yes, the school is demanding--one of the core values says it's a 'no excuses' environment. No, teachers do not 'have a say' in important instruction decisions, as these decisions are set forth in the charter and administered by the Administrative staff. Once again, this is all delineated within the charter. CSCA is definitely not for everyone, but it's difficult for me to empathize with those who are shocked to find out the school is rigorous, challenging, and enforces accountability and results as these values are all clearly expressed in the core values and the school charter. Thus, all parents must do their own homework before choosing the best place of learning for their children.
CSCA has had its ups (the curriculum is excellent) and downs, but I'm afraid to say that it is headed in what looks to be a frightening direction. There seems to be a climate of intimidation and fear among the staff and school as a whole. Teachers have no say in important instructional decisions and parents have lately had a lot of difficulty figuring out what's really going on behind the scenes. I don't trust some of the key leaders of the school, and seriously question sending my child back next fall.
As you read through the reviews, you will begin to see a pattern emerging. There are the parents who's children are able to do the work without excuses, and think that CSCA is the best school in the city. And then there are the parents who's children have had some type of problem, be it behavioral, social or academic; they seem to dislike everthing about the school. I can only say that for my children the school represents an answer to my prayers. I don't know what i'd do if I had to send my children elsewhere. I believe the best way to judge for yourself is to come to CSCA and take a tour, and watch the kids in action. If your'e like me, you'll know it's something special the minute you get there.
With the choices in Dist. 11 this is by far the BEST choice of school to put your child in. Core knowledge is key. Teachers are always available to help both the child and the parent. I honestly believe our daughter has excelled in this charter school then she would've in any of the local district schools. Actually I know for a fact as she was a 'victim' of Dist. 11. Now I feel as thought she is getting an education worthy of preperations for high school and college. thanks csca.
We had such high expectations for our kindergartener and it's interesting to see the trend in reviews. The curriculum has been great and we have enjoyed being involved parents where ever we can. It has been nice to see so much participation encouraged in a public school. However, we do not agree with retention for non-academic, non-disciplinary reasons and have felt pressured to retain our child since October in the school year, when it is far too early to judge how much a child will grow. This really makes me question the school's motives and wonder what the requirements really are for promotion. I certainly don't believe in social promotion or social retention. It's just sad. My child will thrive somewhere else next year.
