The Bromwell principal has driven out over 85% of preexisting teachers, many of whom were there for years and helped make Bromwell a Blue Ribbon school as well as keeping it a Distinguished status school. She has create an environment in which many students do not feel safe dealing with her or happy to have her as our principal. This principal is unfortunately similar to other DPS supported principals who fire experienced teachers.
I am shocked by the negative reviews. While there has been staff turnover in the past few years, the new staff is fabulous. Bromwell had double digit growth in its test scores this year - and that growth is coming from the classrooms of the new teachers. The new staff is thoughtful in their teaching and assignments. They teach to educate children, they assign homework and projects through which children will learn. They do not assign work for assignment sake to give the appearance of being a good teacher. A really good teacher teaches in the classroom during the day. They are such teachers.
Bromwell was an excellent school in it's hayday-- I have sent 3 children there and the youngest is getting a far different experince than the older ones. The best teachers have left or are trying to move. We are left with new and inexperineced teachers replacing them who are not as passionate about teaching. Many of our cultural programs have slowly faded away due to a new principal who believes that kids should all be taught in the exact same DPS model -- which unfortunately for our above average kids-- is not the best way to learn. The school was fabulous about 7-8 years ago and before. It is no longer that school. I would send my kids to Steck now if I had young ones.
The negative reviews are pretty shocking, coming from a parent of two children at Bromwell currently. Our children are having a great experience both academically and culturally at Bromwell and we have not yet had a teacher who we were not totally impressed with. The teachers seem to have just the right amount of push such that there is a healthy challenge for them to advance, but it is not causing a lot of stress on the kids. Our children regularly come home with a positive attitude about learning and exploring and we have to credit the teachers with this. We have gotten to know many of the teachers personally and have not heard a bad word about their experience at the school. There has been some turn-over at the school as others have mentioned, but this has not had any impact on our children's experience at Bromwell. One other thing to add, every family that we know who has come to Bromwell from another school has had a bit of catch up to do. It is always hard to compare the academic performance of schools but the feedback we get from new families tells us that Bromwell is doing well to advance our kids academically. Hope this helps.
The teachers and school were amazing, however the principal who took over the school in 2009 has decimated the staff, lowered morale to an unheard of low and brought down the school's distinguished rating. Only a handful of the original teachers responsible for this school's success are left. She has been responsible for the departure of 18 staff during her brief tenure through terminations, premature retirements and voluntary resignations - unheard of in the realm of top rated schools. This school was one of the crown jewels of the DPS system with a distinguished rating for more than 15 years and this principal brought its rating down to about average. Why in the world would anyone come into a successful school and systematically dismantle all the key aspects of its success including many of its award winning teachers? Tragic!
The teachers are amazing, however the turmoil coming down from the principal's office has cast an ugly shadow over the school. Seven staff members left this years and looks like there will be another exodus this year. The award wining teaching staff is leaving because of the principal. This isn't the great school it used to be.
Pulled from the DPS website, here are Bromwell's School Performance Framework (SPF) scores for the past several years. (The SPF scores are DPS "report card" scores for schools, and the scores are mostly determined by academic performance and growth. You can read all about it yourself at http://spf.dpsk12.org/) Year 2007-08 85% Year 2008-09 87% (New principal arrives in Fall 2009.) Year 2009-10 80% Year 2010-11 80% Year 2011-12 76% This can't be called rising performance by any definition. And now six teachers are all leaving at the same time. This isn't the kind of change that's needed; it's the kind to be avoided. A brighter spotlight needs to be brought on this school to explain the falling scores and exodus of teachers.
As a parent of two students attending Bromwell, I have been impressed with many aspects of the school and disappointed in a few others. First, test scores have been rising - see DPS website. The scores have tracked nicely with other comparable schools such as Steck & Corey. However, all DPS schools seem to spend too much time on testing. From the science and Shakepeare fairs to the school wide art projects, the students have many opportunities to express themselves. Individual teachers bring passion to the classroom and achieve undeniably solid results. The principal's project for the year is the Accelerated Reader program which the Department of Education states has no discernible impact on student reading fluency. It does no harm, but it is far from cutting edge learning practice. The principal is a competent administrator and should be commended for trying to work magic with big cuts to budgets. However, there does seem to be bit too much turmoil for an elementary school. Fortunately, Bromwell parents contribute mightily in time to making the school successful. As you well know, the teachers and the principal can only do so much.
Bromwell has been through much needed change over the past few years The new principal is a strong instructional leader and is setting higher standards. This change has been hard for some, but Bromwell remains a fabulous community of learning for children - meeting the educational needs of children with small group instruction, differentiation in instruction, professional development for staff, a broad range of the arts and everyday p/e. The school has over 90% participation rate in its annual giving campaign - people love the school and generously give back to it.
We choiced into Bromwell this year and it is the best decision we have made in regards to our children's education. The teachers and staff are amazing and the community have been so welcoming. It is a great school.
I am a former student of Bromwell. I can tell you that it is an excellent school. The staff is excellent and the students are great, although some of the parents are snobby and pushy. The fifth grade program is especially beneficial. The teachers prepare students for middle school by helping students manage work load as well as organization. Although in late high school right now, I still remember my fifth grade teacher as the best I have ever had.
Bromwell Elementary has a requirement that proof of residency within the school boundaries be notarized. It is helpful to know that there is a Notary in the school building that can do this for you.
It's a great neighborhood school with high parental involvement, caring teachers and acheives high test results. My son is a graduate of Bromwell.
I have actually found the opposite. When, I went to find a playgroup for my younger child with Bromwell families I found that most of them are working professionals. However, they continue to support the school, and take time out of their busy schedule to participate. Bromwell receives less federal funding than most schools because most of the student body does not qualify for federal funding. Most of the money for extra programs like art, music and the library/media center comes from fundraising. We are not wealthy and have not found discrimination from the parents, students or teachers/administration. In fact, we have found most everyone to be friendly and supportive.
My child entered Bromwell in the 3rd grade. I agree, it is hard to enter a school later and bond with other parents. And yes, some of the parents were snobby. But not most. And we did okay and made some good friends. Also we were not rich Cherry Creek residents. We choiced our child in and got lucky. My child had been behind due to a faulty private school K-2. She was brought up to speed and then some by Bromwell. Without Bromwell I don't know if she would be graduating 5th grade this year with A's. The field trips at Bromwell are awesome! The teachers and principal are top notch. The expectations are high but realistic and achievable. There is an extremely high level of involvement by moms AND dads. Bromwell saved my kid. Truly a GREAT SCHOOL!
Social injustice? That seems a bit extreme. We're a new family at Bromwell and have nothing but good things to say. We knew no one, and we were welcomed - but we got involved right away and introduced ourselves. Parents are involved, and realize that they can help make the school a better experience for their kids. The teachers and administration are great, but parents have to be engaged, and they are. Don't mistake engagement for snobbiness. Furthermore, being sterotyped as rich or 'stay at home moms' is reverse discrimination. I work, lots of us work. And I have to say, it's not the principal's job to force other families to be friends with you. It's a great school and I hope you learn to have a more positive experience. If you think there aren't parents with attitude at any school in the district, think again. Good luck to you.
I agree with the parents review from feb. 2007 the parents at this school are very snobish espeically the ones who have had kids there before. They bascially run the school and the principal. They are not very welcoming to new parents, they ignore you and look upon new parents and students as if they are outsiders. It is equally unfortunate that the staff and principal ignores this very obvious discrimination. They like to speak highly of their ratings but their social injustice towards kids and families should really be frowned upon. Make sure to observe the drop off and pick up times to see all the cliques.
I would agree that Bromwell is academically an excellent school. However, it's important to point out that it is a 'rich' school whose parents can afford to give a lot of money toward that excellence (including very good art, music, PE, and LMC/computer instruction all paid for by the hundreds of thousands raised by the PTA every year). Unfortunately, these same parents (and their children) can be very exclusive and snobby, esp toward kids and parents who can't afford to give quite as much. There is a great deal of parental involvement because there is a whole crew of stay-at-home moms who are there constantly and can be quite the clique.
This is an excellent school. Both the teachers and parents are very involved with the overall progress and development of the kids. There are many interesting and enriching activities in the school that will enable the kids to be all-rounders.
