I am so excited about GALS! I love the feminist philosophy that is driving the school. The academics are excellent, and the movement is really wonderful for our daughter. I could not be happier with this school. And our daughter loves school so much she is actually bummed out on Friday night because she doesn't get to go to school on the weekend. The teachers and staff are all really, really great people. I'm proud to be part of the school.
My daughter is in her second year and loves GALS. The culture is helping her grow into a strong/confident young woman. The school has great teachers and high expectations, but has fun every day with movement/athletics as part of the school day. They mix running, yoga/workouts, dance, and games to keep the girls active and engaged. My daughter looks forward to it, even the runs. Academically, GALS is very strong. They place the students at the right learning level for each class. In class, they mix group projects with individual focus and a fair amount of homework to drive the kids to excel. While they have high expectations and push the students to exceed goals, they have created a fun environment. Students can sit or lie on the floor, if that helps them focus; they snack when needed so they aren't distracted by hunger (healthy snacks only); and the teachers creatively mix games/fun into the lectures to keep the girls engaged. GALS is now a full Middle School, 220 girls, and they are opening the HS next year (2014), starting with 9th and 10th grades. They moved to a great building this year and have all the facilities they need for MS.
We are in our 3rd year at GALS and have two daughters currently enrolled. GALS is an amazing school in so many ways. Academically, my girls have been challenged. They came to GALS from a very high performing elementary school and with high test scores. They have not only maintained those scores at GALS, but they have improved. In her last two years at GALS, my eighth grader's TCAP scores show consistent academic growth well above average. I attribute GALS' academic success in large part to the quality of its teachers - the exceptional teacher is absolutely the rule rather than the exception at GALS. And GALS' approach to educating the whole child has benefitted my girls immensely. GALS exceeds my expectations in terms of the social experience. Middle school has been a smooth transition for both my girls due in large part, I believe, to the school culture at GALS. The girls are encouraged to be themselves and to respect the differences among them. And this culture is incorporated in every aspect of the GALS experience. My girls are confident, excited about learning, and look forward to school each day. I couldn't ask for anything more from a middle school!
We have an 8th grader at GALS. We can't say enough positives with regards to her middle school experience at GALS. She has been encouraged and allowed to grow, mature and learn in an environment that is safe and supportive. GALS has made the middle school years a breeze.
I have been teaching for 13 years and the past three at GALS. I have found a home here. The students and their families are amazing and they truly believe in us and what we do! This year we are working on creating a positive culture for girls by establishing a restorative justice program, refining our hallmark classes on the development of girls, working closely with an incredible team of counselors from Naropa in Boulder to support the social and emotional development of our girls, creating a program that uses movement every day to get girls to honor the mind-body connection, and of course offering rich and rigorous academics that resulted in some of the best growth in the city last year on TCAPS. I stand behind this school, I believe in your daughters, and I am committed to serving them every day.
GALS has been a transformative experience for both of our daughters. The teachers are exceptional and they have addressed each of my children's specific eductional needs, both with advanced exceleration and special education support as needed. The attention to the whole student, addressing intellectual, phsycial, psychological and social needs, couldn't be better. My daughters have become more delightful rather than less during middle school, and they have built confidence rather than lost it. Thank you GALS!
GALS has been the best thing that's happened to my daughter in years. She is thriving socially, emotionally and academically. GALS is a great "fit" for my daughter and the many others who are thriving there!
GALS is not for every girl, but it is definitely for my girl. She thrives at GALS as a whole person: academically, socially and as an individual. One thing I truly appreciate about GALS is that she does not seem to be exposed to socially uncomfortable aspects of middle school life that I see strongly at other middle schools. Someone said that bullying was a problem at GALS, but I wonder what schools they are comparing? Bullying happens everywhere, but GALS seems so much better. I feel much more comfortable with the level of sexuality at GALS. Girls issues are addressed here like no where else...there is no comparison. Most schools have no way to support these aspects for girls. There is so much I could say that I love about GALS, but the what I love best is that my daughter is so very happy there.
I love this school, they have helped my daughter so much. She feels so much more confident in her ability. The staff really cares for my child and they are always willing to help.
GALS is simply the best school ever! Their whole child approach to educating our girls is wonderful! During a time when most girls are struggling with peer pressure, body image and the stress of becoming a teenager - the complete opposite has occurred for my daughter as she loves going to school, loves to learn and feels validated as a person each day. Thank you GALS!!!!
Our daughter is thriving at GALS! Initially we didn't know much about an all girls school or how it would work within our family. This school has exceeded all of our expectations and then some. Not only is our daughter now incredibly happy and confident; but her academic Performance has been incredible. This is an entire school filled with dedicated staff, amazing teachers, and happy girls! I recommend the school to any parent that has a daughter. We are so fortunate to have the school within our community!
My sixth grader started at GALS this fall and we couldn't be happier. She has made friends, the teachers really care, and she is academically challenged. But what I love best about GALS is the mission to help her see her herself as a powerful leader who understands her own needs. She has already learned that she can set her own goals and work hard to achieve them. GALS did great on the TCAP last year and now that they have their own building, they are expanding into High School. Go GALS!
I have never seen my daughter be more enthusiastic about school then she is now. When you pull up to the school and see all the girls walking out smiling, it just puts a smile on my face. The teachers and staff embrace each one of those girls and I have seen more confidence in my child just in the past few months more than I have seen in her whole life. To me a good education leads to greatness and when your child enjoys what they have learned and are excited to tell their parents then job well done. It takes a village to raise a child and my daughter and I have never felt so welcome at a school like we feel at GALS. I'm jealous that I did not go to a middle school like that. The teachers and staff are approachable and only have the best interest of all the girls who attend GALS. I'm a proud parent of a child who attends GALS and have been spreading my love about the school to everyone I meet.
The administration at this school has lost all focus on the mission and goals. They are unable to handle the excessive disciplinary problems. Many of the students are facing extreme social difficulties and bullying is a huge problem. The faculty cannot keep up with the ongoing drama and the girls just suffer emotionally. The academic instruction is okay and most of the teachers are dedicated, but with all the distractions that come from the constant drama, learning definitely isn't the main focus at GALS, and it is not a safe environment. My impression of the administration is that they don't really care how the girls feel about themselves. Given that building self-esteem is part of the mission of the school, it is sadly ironic that my daughter lost all faith in herself after two years in this environment. I can never recommend it to anyone; there is no child who is a good "fit" for GALS.
I LOVE GALS AND I KNOW IT!! I know some of you in my comments say things that aren't true!! also the best I did at school is my GOAL I got 9:54 or was it 9:59 on my mile run? well I made my goal at least. And I really think gals is a perfect school for girls XD
I am a student at gals and personally I dislike it. The drama is over whelming. I learned quite a bit in math and social studies but in language arts and science, I did not. The movement aspect does not help. It is too challenging, which may be good, but leaves me breathless and more tired than before. With a few improvements, this school could be great!
My daughter loves GALS because, in part, there are no boys. With all the emotional and physical changes going on in the middle school years, not having to worry about boys has helped her better cope better with the her own changes (ie acne, moods, etc). Her self confidence also seems to be growing --- a big deal for a shy kid. I was surprised to learn that other parents who have reviewed the school feel the academics are poor. Our experience has been the complete opposite. As a 6th grader, the GALS staff assessed her as advanced in math so they moved her to the 7th grade class. And after a couple weeks, that teacher moved her up to the 8th grade class. That was the very first year I'd ever seen her ask for help with her math homework, which is a good thing. In language arts, she was tackling concepts and material in the 6th grade that wasn't introduced to me until high school. Pretty much across the board, our daughter loved her teachers. And so far, I couldn't be more please with GALS.
Don't believe the hype. While the ideas are good - an all girls' school, athletic principles, and individualized learning plans - the school does not deliver and fails at its core purpose - education. This school has been an extreme disappointment. Every day is a pep rally so the girls love the atmosphere, but the academics are terrible, they have no resources for things like text books or computers or microscopes, the movement principle was greatly oversold, and it is run very poorly. My daughter's self confidence has increased but her academics have fallen way behind. If your daughter is coming from a failing school this is a step up, if your daughter is coming from an average school this is a huge step down. My daughter is going to have a lot of catching up to do at her new school next year.
It wasn't for my daughter. She would come home upset. I know people who like it though. It's for only certain people.
I am a student at this school and it is an amazing school! There may not be a ton of movement but we have only been a school for two years and it's something that the staff is working very hard to improve. Overall the academics are incredible. I have been challenged in so many ways and it's improved my grades tremendously. I now have a 4.0 gpa and scored advanced on all C-SAP tests. Also, The staff is really dedicated. They always take the time to get to know every student and help them with what ever they need. This school is a great school that can only get better as it develops.
