Cherry Creek is a TERRIFIC school if your child is generally a confident, responsible, mature person. Cherry Creek also seems to be working on improving its services for less mature, or less motivated kids. Great teachers and a terrific variety of classes and extracurricular options, in our experience!
Amazing, and extremely committed teachers, who truly care about their student's success! Challenging course options, mind-blowing facilities (5 Gymnasiums, Baseball Diamond, Stadium, Track, Football Field, Auditorium, 2 Cafeterias, etc. etc!). Counselors were so helpful, and Mr.Silva is doing a great job as principal! Into Athletics? No Problem, over 20 sports (eg, CCHS has won every tennis state title since 1971!) . Into Art? Debate? MUN? Drama? Creek has over 200 clubs for everyone. Basically, people from any background, with any interest, and any academic level can be the best at this school. The atmosphere is astounding, with an architecturally beautiful campus of 100 acres, emphasis on nature! Although some may complain about the elitism due to the existence of very wealthy communities in close proximity, it does not mean that we are exclusive or bullies to those of lesser income! Having lived all over the world, I had the best year of my school life when I attended this school! What's not to like about Cherry Creek?
Many claim that Cherry Creek High is a "rich kid's school", and while this may be true, it doesn't seem to make a difference! Very friendly, open students! Despite its large size (almost 4000 students) you can always find a niche here. The teachers I had were some of the most caring people I have ever met, and the counselors and administration truly care about students' success. The fine arts and academic areas are amazing with over 100 clubs devoted to just these. In terms of sports, CCHS is a powerhouse with over 200 state championships. When you go this school, you truly feel as if you fit in and this was definitely true for me. The elitist feel is mostly untrue, and this school is unmatched in its success and opportunities. Go Bruins!
Both of our kids went to school here and they both loved it. We are middle class, not rich. There are plenty of academic opportunities and extracurricular activities.
As a former student at CCHS, I can truly say that having a diploma from this high school has prepared me more for college than many other high schools in Colorado and the nation. Cherry Creek offers a challanging and rewarding environment where any student can succeed if they put the effort in. The teachers are some of the finest around and truly care about the success of their students. As for preparing students for college, it quickly becomes apparent that going to CCHS isn't the same as other high schools. Naive freshman soon mature into responsible young adults as they are exposed to a more collegiate-type environment, including off-campus privledges, choosing their own classes, and overall more freedom. The only negative about CCHS is that unless you are very skilled in a specific sport, don't plan on making it onto any of the cut teams. CCHS takes their sports very seriously and therefore are very selective. I am honored to be able to say that I attended one of the best high schools in the country. Students not only recieve an excellent education, but will make lasting friendships and learn invaluable lessons during their time at Cherry Creek High School.
Cherry Creek provides a competive environment, thus gets results. Unfortunately the long term principal retired, and the new one is less than excellent.
I'm a former student of Cherry Creek High School, graduating class of 2011! I have to say, I love the place, it's one of the best high schools all around in sports and academic wise. Everyone loves one another and everyone gets along! The teachers are amazing! Best four years of my life :)
I am an alumni of Cherry Creek, I could not have asked for a better high school experience. People are quick to judge those of us who went to Creek and like to think we are all wealthy and snooty individuals, but that is simply not true, we are just like any other high school with people from low income families to kids from local celebrities. And like in any other school, you will find it is hard to fit in or enjoy school if you are not involved. Creek is a very spirited school, the students, teachers, staff and parents all take pride in our school from our excellence in sports and academics to the safety and cleanliness our campus provides. People who attended Creek that say they hated it, only hated it because they did not get involved in high school activities. I was personally apart of the theatre, I always went to every school dance, I went to the homecoming pep rally's and football games, and was a part of a few clubs, which there are over 100! I have been given job opportunities just because I went to Creek, people not only in the Colorado community know that Creek is an excellent school and you must be a driven and outgoing person to have succeeded. A+ School (Blue Ribbon)
Cherry Creek is outstanding for a student with enough maturity to want the superior, academic challenge it offers. Do not expect to be coddled here. The college-bound students are highly competitive, like at many of the universities they aspire to attend. The student body is diverse, representing various countries and cultures. The school demands excellence from its student body, expecting that most students are preparing for college. Athletics are highly competitive, some of which consistently win top honors in the state. Emotionally independent, self-directed students will find this environment rich with opportunity and ready to match a thirst for knowledge and enrichment. Alumni say transition to college was easy after attending CCHS. Still, under-motivated students can survive here anonymously in the sheer size of the student body. My daughter is a minority, immigrant student who thrived academically because she took the many opportunities for extra support. Social life here can admittedly be challenging, however, because of its economic bias. Plan to make friends at your church, in your neighborhood, at work, in clubs, but not here, and just absorb the education.
I LOVE this school and I would strongly disagree with anyone who says that the teachers (or anyone) "favor the wealthy kids". As a middle class, single mom, I have raised BOTH of my boys in this school district. Cherry Creek High School is the BEST. I moved here for the schools from New Orleans - and have often said that this district should be a MODEL to other districts. They do things right. Parents are engaged. Yes, they are competitive - but that happens when you're GOOD at what you do. I'm very proud to say my son goes to this school and my other son graduated last year. Going to this school offers advantages you won't see at other schools. Having a diploma from Creek opens doors. And if your kids get involved in something (ANYTHING) - they will go far. At the end of the day, yes - i guess you could say "it's just a school" - but having come from a really crappy school district in Louisiana myself, my kids are getting an INCREDIBLE education here in CCSD.
First-rate high school -- large, but the advantage is that you're treated like young adults with many responsibilities and privileges (self-scheduling, 4yr off-campus privileges, open campus, etc). Many, many, many opportunities for students of all academic abilities and extracurricular talents. Top-rate sports teams, overall excellent faculty, and great organization.
From the reviews, it doesn't sound like it has changed much from when I was there....it's a public school of choice for the local rich people and yes, it's superficial. Excellent academics program though and diverse as far as ethnics go....but no, you won't fit in very well if you aren't the kid of the upper middle class or rich.
I have now had 3 boys at CCHS. Although they were very different academically, CCHS met each of their needs. One was a 4.2 and was on a strong AP track. One was an underachiever with a 2.8 and some learning issues and the last is a 3.0 and a junior. The 2 older boys are at 4 year universities and the jr is on track to go as well. One of the best lessons they learned at CCHS was to be a self advocate which has served them well in college and life. We felt that the teachers were very dedicated and worked hard to help the boys learn. None of my boys were strong athletes but there are over 98 clubs to get involved in and they had a wonderful high school experience.
Superficial teachers for superficial students. The majority of the teachers show a great deal of favoritism to the wealthier students. My child has a majority of AP classes and has A's and high B's so I say this not based on his grades. When I inquired into programs helping students apply for scholarships (we are very low income since I am disabled and had to pay medical bills from illness-even when I had insurance), the school brushed us off. They suggested my child look into the military for school and so he could get discipline. My child has a 4.6 GPA (and is studying Chinese) and the school thinks he needs discipline. They help the wealthier students study for the SAT's etc.., not the smart and poorer students obtain scholarships. Wish we never moved to this school district.
Even though parents have said the school is "just wonderful" i have never seen any in the building. The school is an overall mess from the inconsitency of teachers, the rich white community, and how the atheltics program is God to most of the students. In freshman year, the first month i was physically abused and nothing was ever done, discipline is taken so lightly it is unbelievable. Visual arts are so greatly underlooked its sickening and you can pick challenging courses, but the teaching methods are generally poor and it goes in one ear and out the other. If you aren't one of the cookie-cutter clones, if you aren't in to sports and if you are an intelligent person, i strangly tell you to find somewhere else.
If you have a child with special needs, or worse yet, one that is "twice exceptional," run as fast as you can from the Cherry Creek School District! They are masters at making you think they have your childs best interest at heart, but what they really have in mind is their bottom line.
CCHS is an amazing school. The teachers are fantastic and there are so many opprotunities. it really is very diverse, although, you are expected to be upper middle class, and if you dont fit that then you may have triuble affoarding certian things. I wasnt rich growing up, and it is hard fitting in at CCHS if you have a bit less. Some teachers are bad, but they are few and can be avoided because of self scedualing. If you have to choose a high school, creek isnt a bad option!
Academics are amazing in this school, with the AP programs. The problem in this school is wih the staff. The teachers are all mean towards certain students. They should show the same kidness towards every student, not just the smart and the rich ones from Cherry hills. They help you when you struggle through something, but it just seems like they are doing it to continue their full time job, not really giving any care in their work. Some just read boring lectures in their classes with big packets. It needs to be simple and short so it will make sense. Even wth powerpoint lectures, they try to present with some polite language, trying to be formal, but the lecture itself doesnt make sense. All im trying to say is they should have an interest in their teaching way, so every one will feel better about their teachers that they have.
Wonderful school. Amazing teachers. Many with PhD. I highly recommend it. I completed three AP courses prior to graduation. School offers excellent opportunities to a broad range of students. The teachers here are often offered positions at top Colorado and East Coast schools, but stay.
This school is overrated. It's not diverse at all. The factr that it has alot of oppurtunities is irrelavant because underprivilaged student have a unbelievable hard time getting them. My daughter took a ap course for a whole year and couldnt take the test because it was 86 dollars and we could't afford it.
