My 7 year old son loves Running River School. He can't wait to go to school every day. He has active, engaged teachers, gets to spend quality time outside, and is receiving a really hands on education. One of the things that is most impressive about Running River School is the way the teachers teach the children to communicate and problem solve together. They truly are teaching life-long skills along with academics, art, drama, dance, yoga, and music. When we visited the school before enrolling our son, my spouse and I both wished we had gone to a school just like Running River!

Running River is one of the most remarkable schools I've encountered. There is freedom to teach in experiential, creative, hands-on ways that are beneficial to many different types of learners. Weekly hiking trips, engaging curriculum, parent forums, and a positive, supportive community are some of the things that set Running River apart. Not to mention the wonderful students, eager to learn, explore and share their knowledge.

Our son has attended Running River for 2 and 1/2 years and loves it. It is wonderful to see him literally run into school every morning. After a week vacation, he could not wait to get back to school. Why? As other parents have described the staff is fantastic, the teaching methodology tailored to individual needs, the academics, social interactions, connection to the outdoors and most of all the incredible community are the individual pieces that add up to a unique and wonderful learning environment. We feel so fortunate to have a school like this in our community. Running River is a fantastic school!

We have 2 children at Running River and we feel so grateful to have found a school like this so close to our home. The school's staff makes this school what it is because of their devotion to teaching to the whole child. They find time in the school day to connect to their students through various ways and the kids in turn find time and are not rushed to work on academics, social interactions and physical activity. The school also allows children to move and believe this enhances learning, so they are outside everyday no matter what the weather. Running River is amazing school and has an incredible staff!!!

My wife and I are so grateful to have found Running River School. Our son is blossoming. What really makes a difference: teaching to the whole child, a strong and supportive community, a low student/teacher ratio, and truly individualized learning. Rather than squelching it, Running River is fostering his passion for life and learning.

Running River School exemplifies what education should be about. Many of the parents joke that they wish they could go to school here and in a way we do because the community of parents and teachers here is so strong. Our daughter was not happy in a crowded public school environment and in the past two years at Running River, we've watched her blossom intellectually, emotionally and socially. This is in no small part because everything she receives at the school. Though our son may have been a fine candidate for the public classroom environment, he now attends as well (as a kindergartener) and really loves the school. The staff really focuses on the development of the whole child.

Running River School is a true gem. Our daughter found the larger classes in the public school system to be distracting, overwhelming and disappointing as a child who loves learning. At Running River she receives a completely different educational experience- one that acknowledges, celebrates and challenges her in an exciting, engaging way. The school community is highly involved and supportive. The teachers are down-to-earth, professional and passionate. Within a class of just eight other students, our daughter has the priceless opportunity to ask questions (and have them answered!), explore ideas, and make connections between subjects. She comes home content and full of quiet joy about her day.

Running River School in Lafayette Colorado is an excellent school overall. The teachers at the school are extremely knowledgeable and respectful of our daughter. The classroom environment is comfortable, engaging, and appropriate for our daughter's age. In addition to the literacy and math curriculum she is learning about science and nature hands on by spending time in the outdoors. The teacher listens to the students interests and adds to the curriculum based on what the students are interested in. My daughter learns about proper health and nutrition by nutritious and organic meals prepared at her school, by participating in yoga and P.E., and by taking time to relax and learn how to be calm at various times throughout the week. She participates in art and music as well. This school is very focused on what a child needs to develop a love for learning.

Community ratings and reviews do not represent the views of GreatSchools nor does GreatSchools check their accuracy or verify the reviewers' identities. Use your discretion when evaluating these reviews.

About these ratings

The Community Rating is the school’s average rating from its community members (e.g., parents, students, and school staff). The highest possible rating is five stars; the lowest is one star.

We currently do not have any test score information for this school. Unlike public schools, private schools are not always required to report data about their schools or not required to take the same tests as public schools. Many private schools take different standardized tests; however, that information is often made available only to families of enrolled students. We strive to acquire additional private school data whenever available.

What is the GreatSchools Rating?

The GreatSchools rating is a simple tool for parents to compare schools based on test scores, student academic growth, and college readiness. It compares schools across the state, where the highest rated schools in the state are designated as “Above Average” and the lowest “Below Average.” It is designed to be a starting point to help parents make baseline comparisons. We always advise parents to visit the school and consider other information on school performance and programs, as well as consider their child's and family's needs as part of the school selection process.
