We have, in general, been pleased with KLakes. I'm sorry to see that others are not. We have a little different situation in that we are in the G and T program and maybe things are different there. What I will say is that there seems to be a strong community of parents -- which can be good and "bad." When you get very strong parent opinions, sometimes those may will out over what is best for the school. I have noticed that the "bullying" that goes on in my kid's classroom is handled in a very "let's try to all get along" approach and I would like to kids held more accountable for their actions. We love the teacher we had last year and hope to have a similar positive experience this year. Although at times, the home work was -- wow -- a lot -- we think our kid has really accomplished a lot and enjoys the challenge. We personally wish there was more structured play time during recess instead of kids just roaming around gossiping -- there doesn't seem to be much incentive for the kids to be active outside and if it slightly cold or raining they come in and watch movies. We figure if that is the worst issue then things can't be too bad. :)
My husband and I were skeptical of this school given the rating and state grade; however, decided to test it for a year. We were extremely disappointed with the handling of a bullying situation that surfaced shortly after the school year began. Our child who loved preK became closed off about school and no longer enjoyed it. We approached the Kindergarten teacher who confirmed the bullying was happening. We asked her to keep us abreast of the situation and received no follow up. We attempted working with the parents of the child but they would not spare any time to help the children work out difficulties. The principal made it clear he wanted no part in mediating with us and the other parents and even said he did not believe a child in Kindergarten could be a bully, though the teacher along with a substitute had confirmed the behavior. Lastly, the very child who bullied our child along with other classmates was given a 'citizenship' award at the graduation ceremony. We are extremely disappointed and surprised at the negligent mishandling of this situation, especially in light of the problems with bullying escalating in CO as well as around the country. Would not recommend.
This school is on the right track!! It has been a year now since the new principal has been in place and I have to say that I m EXTREMELY pleased with his leadership. Any time that I have had a question or concern, he has been prompt to respond and I feel his decisions are fair. I have also noticed improvements in the way that my child s teacher manages her classroom and is working to engage students. I HIGHLY recommend Kendrick Lakes to others. This school has a fair amount of diversity and strives to challenge students to be life-long learners. For those who are displeased, it s important to remember that EVERY school has challenges, and the experience you have is directly related to what you put into it.
Teachers are all about making sure they teach to the "test". My child is only evaluate based on his ability to "score". The principal is new and no doubt wants to stay there so the pressure to have test scores high is incredible. They removed their PYP programming which was a devastating blow...not enough "teacher buy-in". Well of course not. Not when the pressure to teach to the "test" is all this school is about. If all you care about are state test scores for your elementary child's education than this is the school for you.
This school is awful. Their student to teacher ratio is so low that they have to merge grades in order to accommodate their students. Their special needs program is severely lacking to the point where we have to home school our child. The teachers are uncaring and stand by while other students get bullied, beaten, and while gangs of students attack one child, yet the one child gets in trouble just because he is labeled "special needs". We are withdrawing our child immediately. I would never send any of my other children to this schoool. Horrible.
I have seen a decline in this school over the past several years. Administration switching, teachers changing and leaving. The new principal is a people pleaser and I think wants to avoid any real authority when it comes to conflict because he is an interim principal and parents have a "say" if he stays or other candidates will be interviewed. My child's teacher avoids communication and is very scattered. They recently dropped the IB curriculum because teachers thought it was too much work, showing students "hey, if it's too much for you just quit". Same parents and PTA involvement. Seems like less going on this year and not much buy-in from other parents as previous years at PTA events. Very disappointed.
The new principal is a breath of fresh air, let see how he handles this full year. Some of the teachers that I had a problem with have retired, my child got them when they were "checked out" one teacher lost her son and was retiring, one retired and was not interested in the kids, another was planning a wedding and my child new more about her wedding then school math.

How this principal still has a job is a surprise to our family. So many dicipline problems here that she fails to handle correctly.
The first day of school, we received a note from the teacher that stated, "So glad to have you 'hear'". If you can't spot what is wrong with that, then perhaps your student is in the right place. Things went downhill fast after that. I found the teacher and principal more concerned with budget cuts than with the education of my child. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but I at least expect the teachers to know how to spell!
My daughter began at KL in Kindergarten and tested into the Gifted and Talented Program. In a matter of 3 years I had 2 separate teachers tell me my daughter had ADD. After extensive testing we determined the problem was not with our daughter, but with the classroom. Her 3rd grade teacher pointed out flaws, in front of the class, on numerous occasions. She even accused her of lying, in front of the class, which we determined were unfounded accusations. Our daughter began to hate going to school and also hate herself. We told her just to hold out until the following year and that the next teacher would be much better but her current teacher was asked to move up with the class the following year. We transfered to another Gifted and Talented school this year and have had a phenomenal year with our daughters self esteem growing in leaps and bounds.
This third year principal is caring, dedicated, and a true leader. She is getting the IB program going at the school. My daughter loves going to school. There are many activities to do. My daughter and her father attended the father/daughter dance last night. They had a great time!! The principal is approachable and interested in every child getting a quality education. May daughter's scores are the hightest ever since the new principal has been there!
The Principal at this school is horrible. She has no way of following through with discipline problems at the school. She is a new principal and it shows. The way she treats some of the parents and even some of the teachers is completely unacceptable. I do have to say that the teachers at this school are the only reason I am keeping my child here (for right now). Although, the principal keeps getting rid of some of the best teachers here.
My child is very happy at KLES. She started in the 3rd grade and we, as a family, we have been received very warmly by the teachers, staff and the PTA. I like that KLES offers everything from Special Education to a Gifted and Talented program and is fortunate enough to have full-time specials teachers! The PTA works hard to support the school as well as the teachers and students. KLES also has many students who have been 'choice' enrolled. Which means this is not their home school, but parents have chosen to enroll their children in this school because of its excellent reputation!
My Child is always talking about how much fun the different styles of learning at this school is. They are always thinking of new ways to reach these kids. There are plenty of field trips and wonderful teachers. I feel that my child IS getting the positive attention that is so important to a good education.
It's a fine school, trapped in a terrible facility. With virtually no windows. Food service is shameful, and handicap access is poor. So why do we remain? My child's GT class is a model learning environment, with 18 students working with a witty, devoted teacher. My child is happy and successful, so we'll put up with the rest.
No communication from teacher to parent. Too much emphasis given to GT students. A couple of outstanding teachers at the 4th grade level. Music teacher is also outstanding. My child goes here because it's within walking distance.
Please keep looking. The Principal here does not care too much for a parent's concern. She will take the word of the teacher before the parent. I don't really see much in the way of extracurricular activities. The best part of the whole school is the music teacher and honestly, that's quite sad to say seeing how the other classes are more important to a child's education. This school lacks terribly.
I've been quite disappointed with KLES. The teacher communication is practically non-existent. I didn't find out until I received my daughter's report card that she was doing so poorly. The teacher promised assistance, yet in less than a week she failed to uphold her word. Her 4th grade teacher was more concerned with text messaging and answering her cell phone during class than giving that attention to the kids that needed the extra help. I will be removing my daughter from this school next year. I should have removed her last year, but didn't want to make my decision on one bad apple. 'No Child Left Behind' does not apply to this school. If your child is perfect, they'll do well.
the school has suffered the pst 6 years. 5 principals, lack of follow through on ALP's, large classes. Hopefully, if this principal stays - things will settle down. PTA is not well attended, although there are lots of involved parents in the classrooms. Excellent music teacher, new and vibrant PE teacher, good art program. DI was strong - in fact, global, but interest dropped. GT program small.
