It isn't a bad school as long as you do not have a special needs child. They keep the classes at a more manageable size than a lot of schools, but that is small towns for you, they can do that. However I would say that if you have a special needs child then most likely you will not be happy there. One of the teachers in the middle school informed the students that ADHD does not actually exist. Several of their teachers have gone to seminars on Autism but still do not understand children on the spectrum's behaviors at all. Do not even get me started on the school nurse. And for the love of all that is holy, you do not want your child involved in their Bridges program. They seem to feel that because they have a "diagnoses" chart that they know better what is going on with your child than you or even several doctors do. And what ever you do, do not let them know that you do not agree with their version of parenting, you will regret it.
My grandson came here from Mesa, AZ over a year ago, since this time here he has improved his grades and learning skills by almost 150%, love having him in a small school where the teachers care about the success of our students here in Pagosa....
compared to the school im going to now psjh school is not extremely good but i did do pretty well in pagosa because the 7 th grade math here is like 8 th grade math there in psjh.......i think the special needs program was excellent but i think us students didnt get listend to that well when we got in trouble and the teachers didnt listen to us or our side of the story..... physical education is great....the teachers sometimes did strive to help us on csaps and im excited to find out wat my score was this year.......
I'm very pleased with the efforts of PSJH to provide an excellenct experience for learners in our small town.
As a parent I was very pleased with the quality and dedication of the teachers in the 7th and 8th grades (Mrs. Ratcliffe and Mr. Kurz are excellent math and science teachers!). Somewhat disappointed with the lack of leadership shown by the principal; also his favoritism towards the athletes.
Very active community within the school system. Small town, big school learning. Emphasis on learning and not burdened like larger cities with safety/crime issues.
