Too much emphasis on sports programs with not nearly enough on student retention and education development. The drop out rate is disheartening. This school needs more math, science, music and art focus for student development. The new sports complex being constructed is a slap in the face with the educational issues present.
John Mall would be a great atmosphere for kids if there was a better enviorment to learn in. At John Mall there is no respect to students coming from not only the new principle but also from some staff. Some kids are problem causers but the rest of the kids are really good. John Mall aint a bad school!
to much bulling. Not enough activities.
JHMS is a school full of great kids that care about each other. They do their best in succeeding throughout their academic careers. The economics and social expectations of Walsenburg are what limits the students' success, not the school. John Mall has a much friendlier and accepting atmosphere than many of its neighboring schools in surrounding cities/towns. Overall, John Mall Jr/Sr High is one of the good ones. It's comments that degrade and belittle the school that add to the students' behavior, so maybe more parents should spend their time improving the situation, rather than complaining. GO Panthers!
One of the problems of with John Mall is there is no real programs other then sports. This school has always focased to highly on sports. For one they have cut the music program, they have a small art program, and many of the students that graduate have a hard time to do some basic skills.
Some really excellent personnel at JMHS--including Colorado's 2003 Teacher of the Year. They seem to be dealing with the inevitable druggie challenges and have some decent sports programs, but no music, no drama. If they maintain high enough standards for the students, this school could continue to improve and become a tremendous asset.
