Profile Completeness

INTERMEDIATE

Want to improve this school’s profile? You can!

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.

We are on our 4th year at Compass and have intentions of staying at least through 6th grade. We will def. send our second child to school here! I feel so thankful my kid isn't told to sit at a desk in a row and do the same work everyone else is doing. We have a very motivated, self-directed kid and I believe much of this was taught to her in her preschool years there. While I may wonder what they are doing in class sometimes , I never question it because I see the results. For me the biggest positive has been sense of community and respect for others. I smile with pride about my kids "playground behavior" when we are in public!! And she's right there academically with her peers... for me that's the biggest positive. I was always quite academic myself but I'd rather my kid be able to navigate the social world excellently and be equal intellectually to others rather than be smarter than the rest and stressed about perfect grades.

My son is going on his 3rd year at this school he will be a 1st grader. First if you don't understand what Montessori is do some research it will help you understand what is going on in the classroom. My son excelled here and loves the freedom to pick what he is going to learn. I love that the teachers encourage him to try new things and work with him on the things he finds hard. As I said he will be I first grade this year but is reading at a 5th grade level. I LOVE that they dont "teach to the test" when it come to state requirements yet they have GREAT final scores in high school. Its about the kids here! Great community and look in to the middle school here or "farm school" as we call it. You won't find that anywhere else.

Sending my children to Compass was one of the biggest mistakes we have made. We pulled our second grader out after she complained about doin the same work over and over (there are three grades in one room). My oldest was receiving a great education in bowling parties and yoga but not so much in reading, writing and math! I'm not quite sure how the school meets the requirements got student contact days as they seem to average one day a week where there is no school or it us a half day. The culture seems to be geared towards helicopter parents that can live at the school with their child and tense expectations are pushed onto working parents! The teachers are smug and condescending and the drama of the recent Board and admin is ridiculous!

I am very happy with the pre-k Kindergarden program. It is a good school which is lacking in some areas due to funds. There are some down fall It is not free for pre-K and Kindergarden. It is really worth the money. Good school focused on making each child do their best.

My children are in their eighth year at Compass. The more I learn about Montessori, the more I appreciate having this as a free alternative to the testing focused curricula of our neighborhood school. And I am heartened to know that Compass is on par or better in terms of school performance, especially when it comes to longitudinal growth. Compass graduates are going onto top- notch colleges and interesting careers.

I enrolled my daughter at Compass Montessori when she was three years old & she stayed all the way through 6th grade. I have been very impressed with the staff & community - they really care about the kids & go out of their way to support them! I love the look on people's faces when I tell them all the unique things our kids do everyday!

My daughter goes to Compass and the teachers there are friendly and easy to talk to. My daughter has made many friends and has learned things that I thought were more advanced for first graders. She loves the freedom that comes in the Montessori curriculum. But of course my daughter is very self motivated and can complete tasks without a strict schedule. I believe that the Montessori learning style isn't for all kids but for a select few like my daughter it works very well and I believe Compass is a great school and gives parents plenty of opportunity to volunteer and be involved in their child's education.

I have had the experience of having 4 of my children go to this school at one time. I can say that I believe only 2, maybe 3 of them would have excelled in this particular montessori program. It is a very parent/money biased school. one o my children was told that they were having so many issues that she was going to fail a full grade level. I questioned this and was oousted by faculty and the board. When I moved my children out of the school, all of the children (including the one who was 'failing') are at the top of their classes in academic performance and are poulling either straight A's or A's and B's. IMO this is not a great school to attend.

My son attended this school for 5 years. It was fine but the people were not never very friendly. The trips were good but had huge student to teacher ratios. If you were not a 'founding family' people seldom speek to you. This community preaches diversity but it really is quite closed to things 'different'. I'm happy to be leaving. My son needs to know the real world - Compass does not offer this. Academics are only mediocre.

I have heard Compass has improved, but when we were there I found that I just wasn't willing to risk my childs education on what I saw as a nice but disorganized school. (I can't say enough good things about the kindergarten though.) They rely on parents to the point of burn-out for many. Communication is poor. I would often find out about events a day or two in advance and it was impossible for me to adjust my schedule with such short notice. Add to that the fact that if you happen to not like a teacher it is tuff because your child stays in that class for three years. There is a large turn over in staff. It is a well-intentioned school that needs to iron out the wrinkles that have lead to many of us switching to more conventional schools with better academic ratings and more opportunities. I am enrolling my 5th grade, 11 year old daughter in Compass Montessori for the 06-07 year. I had also looked at the school for my 16 year old daughter currently in an IB program. My 11 year old really liked the school, visited with her dad and I and also shawdowed. Our 16 year old really liked the school but as she has been pre IB since 7th grade felt she felt she needed to continue being academically challenged.

Compass does a very good job of following Montessori philosophy while complying with state and District reguirements of a charter school. Teachers are very caring and dedicated. My one complaint is that there are no consequences when children don't meet expectations. At times the teachers would threaten to withhold privileges, like field trips, for children who haven't completed the expected work. Yet, it seems that every time the teachers would not carry through on that threat. The school has a good music program, and offers some martial arts after school.

My child is currently in 2nd grade, and has been going to Compass since Kindergarten, so I do not know how to compare it to Jefferson public schools. Compass is one of the only Montesorri's that have a Secondary school & it's nearby in Golden, which is great! Compass offers discounts for several academic activities, however most our not coordinated by Compass. A few extra cirrucular activites that Compass does host is a music program, karate lessons, art, Science fairs, Spanish lessons(although haven't seen any this year)and I'm sure many more I'm not aware of. Compass requires 50 hours/school year of parent (relatives & freinds can also help you out on your hours) volunteer time to help clean the school, do projects, handyman work, etc. Overall I like the teachers (although limited) and the program Compass offers for my 2nd grader!

Compass Montessori Charter School has put confidence back in my son, that he can succeed. He has had the opportunity to study music here and loves it. He is learning to manage his time and work independently as well as work with a team. These lesson are helping him understand himself. His teacher has a one on one meeting every week with the students to help with their success. This has been very helpful for my son. He doesn't feel lost. I highly recomend this school it has been a Godsend.
