Teachers should be able to friend students on Facebook. It is simply a way of communication between the student and teacher.

I'm on facebook; but my options make it impossible for any person, student or stranger to "friend" me without approval from me. As a H.S. teacher I can understand some "club" sponsors making a strictly professional site; it encourages club "spirit".

My primary first grade teacher was the best ever. I skipped Kindergarten because they thought I'd be bored since I could read and write, but didn't think about being away from my mom all day. Ms L and I kept in contact until I was in junior high.

As a student teacher in my last semester before internship I personally feel that friending any student is completely inappropriate. We are instructed to even delete our own personal FB profile while teaching for security reasons. I have to agree!

A personal Facebook page would be inappropriate. Teachers should never be personal friends. It can be helpful to have a school page, run by and overseen by, the school that all teachers in the school can use.
