Each administrative team supports a single grade level with an assistant principal, two counselors, an administrative assistant, two behavior managers and a social worker. Any incident of bullying is dealt with by a team with the resource to be sure all involved are treated fairly and appropriately.
East Hartford High School's largest department is Special Education. We are known regionally and provide services by arrangement to out of town medically fragile students whose sending schools do not have adequate facilities. From tutoring and minimal support for students who only need a little extra all the way to a facility for medically fragile students, we have what our students need.
East Hartford Public Schools has been voted a Best Workplace by the Hartford Courant (newspaper) 5 years in a row. Our leadership is exemplary both modelling best practices and supporting teachers, students and families.
Students meet in a program we call connections on a weekly basis. Students participate in activities, assemblies and volunteer work in the community. In fact, 30 hours of community service are required for graduation. Most students go far beyond this and learn valuable life skills through connections and their connections mentor.
With so many students from so many backgrounds, teachers need to be able to bring material to classes in multiple ways. Student centered, differentiated instruction is the approach. Our commitment is to teach every student every day.
East Hartford High offers courses at a variety of levels. Typically, electives provide opportunity to follow up classroom activities while honors and AP courses require nightly assignments. There is tutoring available from student volunteers as well as faculty and an athletic study hall before and after practice.
East Hartford High School is a wonderful, diverse community which gives students a real world experience. 25% of students leave with college credits while many earn nursing certifications or complete internships in local corporations. It is big enough to offer more than 20 AP classes and 25 varsity sports while offering dozens of clubs and activities that allow every student to find a place.
East Hartford High School is an abysmal failure. The 2012 CAPT scores for the 10th grade class revealed: 83% of the students failed to meet the reading standard; 31% below the state average. 84% of the students failed to meet the math standard; 33% below the state average. 83% of the students failed to meet the science standard; 30% below the state average. 67% of the students failed to meet the writing standard; 30% below the state average. I have read reports that the students are disruptive and curse the teachers. This is a failure of the administration (not the teachers) to promote a learning environment. Those students that are disruptive should be removed from the school and their parents should be required to pay for their education at some other learning institution or to home school their children. It is not fair to make the rest of the children suffer life long educational shortcomings due to some students disrupting the education process. Let those that are disruptive suffer the consequences of their actions and spare those that are there to learn and are well behaved.
I really do not understand why people say "it's a diverse school" what does that even mean. The world is diverse. It's a given stop saying that. That it's even noted or said is the problem. We live in diversity every single minute of our lives. Stop removing my opinion. i had two generations there I have a right to voice our experience. Denial is not the avenue for success.
