Welcome to the Brownstone Intermediate School, where it is all about the Connecticut mastery test and not about educating children to succeed in the future or over come learning difficulties. I have now had two children go through Brownstone and things have gone from bad to worse. The principle at Brownstone is only interested in touting her blue ribbon school status and not the kids learning what they need to know in higher grades levels. Blue Ribbons are given to school that do well on mastery tests in CT. while students are forced into timed testing in class real work is sent home for the parents to teach their children sometimes upwards of three hours of homework a night. Teachers seem unwilling to stay after to help a student struggling in a subject even when their own teacher comments point out they need help in that class. Instead insisting the child stay in from recess or you the parent spends more time on that subject at home. Books are not available to all students in all classes and the teachers act like once they have put in their six hours they rest is up to you. I have found many of the teachers at Brownstone passive aggressive and one or two down right bullying.

It is about time - parents start being parents and remove the kid gloves - and teach their kids how to show respect and be accountable for their OWN ACTIONS .. It is clear that MANY parents in this day and age- choose to worry about how their kids Feel and try not to say -rock the boat " instead of being the parent and mentor rather then their kids friend. It is UNREAL how kids are these days and tge ENTITLEMENT they think they should have ! This creates the issues we see today Nationwide - and I really pray that our next generations start to have parents that ACTUALLY PARENT - and not continue to CAVE in to the kids - and learn the word " NO" for themselves and 4 their kids sake. It is insane that so many parents Accept the behavior that we see 2day !

Teachers are awesome. Administration not impressive. Like the previous parent review (May 18, 2009) stated, lots of bullies throughout Portland schools. 'Kids are rough on each other on Portland from preK - high school.' Wish we could have known that before settling here.

BIS is not a great school. Portland is very clique oriented and there are a lot of bullies within the system, this problem is never really addressed in an appropriate fashion. Move to a surrounding town and save yourself a lot of grief.
