No touch rule at this school prevents the kids playing together or just have fun. Being punished for even accidental touch and alienating the kids from eachother.
On the positive side: wonderful principal leadership, parent involvement, school philosophy on getting along. On the negative side: (1)Shelton school district does not budget school maintenance. Schools are run down until a new one must be built. Booth Hill has had no heating system maintenance in 30 years. (2)The Father's Club has been forced to pick up the slack in maintenance where the district has been lax, i.e., painting, building the playscape. (3)The school needs expanding. Art and music classes are held in the cafeteria. (4)The playscape is not big enough to allow everyone to play at once. The children rotate use of the equipment every 4 days. The other three days the children can only play on the asphalt. These are mostly political problems that can only be changed by a change of the Board of Ed.
I believe that there is too much structure around the whole school. The Kids must always be so quiet that talking during lunch can get them to loose part or all of their recess. Which does not benefit the children or the teachers. I believe that positive reinforcement works better and helps children in their self esteem. I believe that children should be responsible for their behaviors. Depending on these behaviors one must decide appropriately what beh. modification will work best. There is too much of a dictatorship in the whole school. Where teachers do not give a free opinion. Without being scrutinized by the principal. Our Principal has great leadership skills but we should be more gentle toward our children.
I have a child in kindergarten at BHS. It is an excellent institution. The teachers are top-notch, the environment is friendly and welcoming and there is a good amount of parental participation. I would recommend BHS to any parent looking for a public elementary school that straives to be the best it can be.
