My son just started as a Freshman this year, and thusfar, I am extremely pleased, and pleasantly surprised, with how wonderful the experience has been for him thusfar. I don't see many recent reviews so figured I'd add my two cents. Don't listen to all the bad things you hear. Everyone is different and sees things from different perspectives. My son's teachers have all been wonderful. He is in the College Prep level which is challenging but not overly so (which means he still likes school since he isn't struggling at a level he can't handle). He is getting involved with great clubs, and is not bullied. He is into lacrosse as well, which he loves, and is starting to come into his own as a person. I am proud of him, and know he will succeed in life!

As a former student at this high school. I would recommend that the parents get involved once your child is in this school. The Head Masters and directors of education base your child's track as it pertains to the standarize testing scores and not their grades because they do not want to lose anymore funding from the state. I never opened a book in high school and graduated with honors. I was put in a track 3 class and when the teachers tried to move me up to track 1 and 2 the Head Masters and the Principal would not because of my standarize scores. This School Failed Me and Many Others.

Staff are very professional. Housemasters are understanding of parents & students. Security has greatly improved. Plenty of extracurricular activities are available.

I am currently attending Shelton High School in my junior year, and thus far I have experienced bad and good things as a result of faculty and the student body. This is not a great school at all and there are many different problems that need to be resolved.

Shelton High School is good with teaching and the teachers seem very involved. My daughter has learned so much in the past year compared to when she was at a different school district. One thing I HIGHLY dislike about this school is the lack of diversity. It is a mostly all white school, and my daughter experiances much racism, including it from the staff. I have spoke with a few of the teachers about it and they all say that they dont see it. This school needs to be looked at a little more and we need more diverse teachers to show different races here.

I graduated from SHS many years, ago and now have a stepdaughter in the school. I believed then, as I do now that it's a great school.The staff was wonderful, and always helpful to those in need and whom were't too lazy to ask. There is trouble like everyother HS in America, but it's parent involvement and administration presence that can make a world of difference. As for mindless rules and other such complaints, stop babying the students! When they get a job in the real world, are they going to to cry to mom and dad when their bosses ream them for not being somewhere when they were supposed to be? Structure in a school setting is healthy, and would do a lot more good for the student population if parents weren't so opposed to someone else telling their child what to do.

I am currently a freshman at SHS and i must say it is an okay school. However there are alot of things i dislike about it. it is very crowded in the hallways when passing classes. There are so many people and you only get 2-4 minutes to get to each class. Another thing is the lack of diversity in this school. The teachers are alright but not too great. Some of them expect you to understand everything therefore they dont spend alot of time on something. Overall its not the best school.

I agree with the parent that is concerned about the bullying that goes overlooked many times at SHS. Even when reported to the Guidance Departmnent, which leaves alot to be desired, my daughter was still threatened and forced to defend herself during school hours. The lack of response from higher authorities when informed of this unfortunate incidence ( the SHS Principal, and Superintendent of Shelton Schools) has left a bad taste in my mouth, as they never felt the need to respond to an upset and concerned parent with an emotionally scorned child.

I hear these parents talk about how their kids can't even enter the library or they get stopped in the hall for passes. Its a large school and its impossible for teachers to know all the students. Do you want random non-students walking the halls? It's not hard to get a library pass, just takes a little effort to ask a teacher. If your kids are complaining about teachers and rules they need to stop being lazy and involve themselves. Its easy to drift through with mediocre grades and no after school activites. Education is only what you make of it. The rules are simple, do your work and have respect for the staff. Don't smoke, don't wear reavealing clothes or hats, sounds like jail, right? Give me a break. I graduated in 99 with a 3.7 and went to a great college.Teach your kids the value of education.

SHS is a huge school compared to the one I went to (400+ in a class vs. 300 in the school) so I was afraid the size would be overwhelming for my kids. Just the opposite it true. There are so many opportunities both academic and extracurricular that there's no excuse for a student not finding a place to fit in. AP classes are available from 10th grade on and students do well on the AP exams. In my sons' circles of friends many are going on to great colleges. (I have a grad and a junior) It's definitly a 'football' school when it comes to sports which can get obnoxious but other sports are supported too and getting stronger. Student government is strong, and annual events like talent shows, plays, concerts, and dances are high quality. It's a public school with bumps and warts but has a lot to offer.

This school is ok. not the best and not the worst. I'd say it was average, had average number of clubs (the Robotics club is great - they've done very well in competitions) I think there could be more elective programs to choose from. Both my kids lost out on elective classes because the older grades got first preference, and due to no other available classes at the times on their schedule, they ended up with study halls. Not the point people! Unfortunately Shelton's short when it comes to funding the schools, and between economic climates and town leadership, they've had cutback after cutback. Teachers- like most schools - there are great ones and not so great ones and the personalities involved. That bothers me less because the students learn how to deal with different personalities - and learn to succeed.

Shelton High School is a mediocre learning establishment. My son continually complains of incompetance among the staff (guidance counselors playing computer games during operating hours; difficult and inflexible teachers; highly restrictive and unncessary rules; etc.) and is disraught and upset once he returns home in the afternoon. The language department is especially disappointing and pathetic: few teachers are capable and fluent. Bullies are also a constant bother to my son, and administrators have yet to assist me in making my son more comfortable while there, so he may learn. Only the social workers seem to have their act together and, unfortunately, that is not what makes a good learning environment. I would transfer my son to a private school, but I lack the available funds.

In response to the one who claims that 'SHS is the biggest waste of an establishment', teachers have better things to do than harass or 'bother' students. Children are an example of what they have been taught. Yes, SHS does have some problems, as all schools do, and they will or are being addressed. My children are not in high school yet, and SHS will be the school they attend. Parent involvement is crucial to a healthy student.

My daughter attended SHS from 1999 to 2002. She had a great experience there and made many friends (including teachers that she still visits). She was and still is an honor student. Sure there were problems, but what school is without problems.

Shelton high school is the biggest waste of an establishment ever. It benifits no one, my child constantly comes home complaining of how many times she was asked for a pass or told to do this or that. She couldnt even use the library during her lunch period becuase she needed a signed pass to enter. What happend to the day of children comming home and saying they learned somthing great. Not stories of getting hassled by teachers for nothing.

Shelton High School is no longer a place of creativity and education. It's all about instituting irellavant rules to restrict. I would never want to send my child there.

Shelton High School is a great place for our kids. The atmosphere is of a college level teaching responsibility and self reliance, to those who want to learn. The staff is always ready to help and give a great challenge.

About the tests


In 2011-2012 Connecticut used the Connecticut Academic Performance Test (CAPT) to test students' skills in reading, writing, science and math in grade 10. The CAPT is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Connecticut.
Beginning in the 2009-2010 school year, the Connecticut Department of Education implemented new definitions of what it means to be proficient on the CAPT test. The new standards for proficiency are higher than in previous years and the percent of students earning a proficient score is expected to be lower as a result of this change.
