Teachers are fantastic, but the guidance dept is enept, principal is an elitist snob, spends more time at seminars and coffee socializing than involvement with actual student needs

The school took me in - the guidance department was great in helping me set goals and pick the right colleges to apply to. The sports program was very strong and we all had a great time team building

I have 4 children that went through SHS. All did sports, all succeeded academically. This school is better than private schools. The curriculum prepares them for college on an outstanding level. You would quite possibly be a fool if you didn't send your kids to this school over a private institution.

Simsbury High School is academically strong, but relies upon the motivation of its students to carry its reputation. If your child is not motivated, don't expect SHS to do much for him. Perhaps the new principal will rectify this.

SHS is a great place to learn. 95% of teachers really love their job. Core classes have curriculum that is reviewed and perfected annually so its basically customized around the classes in the school at the time. The current ronovation will make the 30+ year old school state of the art. SHS has unique electives that give students a head start for college. Great athletics give students something to put their time and passions towards. The Music department is easily the best in the state and one of the best in the country. Passionate teachers constantly push their students to acheive nothing but excellence but still have a soft and caring touch. I would have my children no where else but SHS.

I have 2 children: SHS 2008 and 2004 graduate. Population places the highest value on children. Most teachers and children are driven. CAPT scores always at or near state highs. 92.6% earn 3 or higher on AP exams. Rigorous academics are combined with high participation and success in athletics/music/art. The SHS has won state championship(s) every year since 1992, when I came to town. Hartford Symphony performs annually with SHS music students. Joyful entertainment. Average SATs 582v/583m (2002) mean bright, diligent children in the bottom half of a highly competitive, not too diverse, class. State average is 502v/503m. Being average may be frustrating. Neil Sullivan, named Principal 9/2004, 7 years Vice Principal at SHS, and extensive building additions/renovations/improvements should maintain excellent educational services and student/teacher enthusiasm. Guidance said at Freshman breakfast, 27% of 2004 graduates were admitted to first tier colleges. Efforts must continue to realize college placements our well-prepared grads deserve.

SHS is an excellent school with many opportunities. Adaptable to every child. Excellent teachers, very dedicated. Unusually ambitious students. That can be overwhelming at times since the students can be competetive. A truly phenomenal school for the parent who wants the best for his/her child.

Profile Completeness

Want to improve this school's profile?

All schools on GreatSchools begin with BASIC completeness, which includes important information like contact details and test scores. It’s up to the school community to take the next steps. As a parent or community member, you can share what you know with other families by writing a review or answering a few questions about what the school offers. As a school leader, you can upload photos, describe school programs, and more with an Official school profile.

The completeness meter moves to INTERMEDIATE, then ADVANCED, and finally HONOR ROLL as you complete the following: 10 or more reviews, at least 1 photo, and 9 program questions parents find helpful.
