Teachers take a decidedly proactive approach, instead of reactive approach to bullying at Newfield. They make every effort to address disagreements between students and keep parents in the loop when an interaction of concern occurs.
As a member of the Stamford Community, I am consistently impressed with the wonderful the staff at Newfield School. Everyone I have meet has been exceptionally warm, caring, and exhibited a very high level of professionalism. When you walk into the building you are greeted by colorful student artwork and you know immediately that this school cherishes creativity. As classes move through the halls, one can tell both teachers and students are well practiced in their classroom routines. Overall, I can't say enough wonderful things about the high quality teachers I have come to know throughout the years at Newfield. It truly is a special place!
The leaders at Newfield care about kids above all else, and always put the best interest of the child first. It's rare to see a principal and vice principal know the first and last name of each and every student in the building, but it just goes to show how much care and thought they put into the placement of each child.
Students receive homework regularly that reinforces concepts they're learning in class. They are also taught to be self-directed and independent, so they are responsible for writing down their homework in their agenda and completing it each night. Teacher's even use reading and math contracts to monitor student progress.
The school works on building strong character traits like honesty and respect among students with a program called Responsive Classroom. It helps teachers engaging students in daily supervised positive peer interactions like morning meeting.
The teachers I have met have are highly educated, with 2 and 3 Masters degrees. The majority also have 15-20+ years of experience at the elementary level. Student benefit greatly from their thoughtful and highly informed approach to instruction.
There is a comprehensive team of specialists at Newfield that includes a Speech Pathologist, Social Worker, School Psychologist, Special Education Teachers, as well as Bilingual and ESL teachers that work together to provide a range of additional support services for students with learning differences.
The SRBI, Reading, and SPED team always have the students' best interest in mind and modify instruction regularly to meet individual needs. Plus, I love how these support teams all confer with one-another before coming up with a plan of action for each child.
