I am currently finishing up my freshman year at E.O. Smith. Like another reviewer said, I was, too, shocked when I saw that E.O. Smith received a 5/10. As mentioned before, we are a very diverse school, with students from not just three, but six towns (Mansfield, Willington, Ashford, and Columbia; those living in Coventry and Windham are able to attend if they are in the Ag Ed program). Being someone who is very self-driven, and takes pride in their work, I do believe that my education at E.O. Smith so far has been excellent. As an all-A and AP level student, I have gotten a lot out of each course. E.O. Smith offers a wide variety of classes and activities to meet the interests of many students--upperclassmen even have the opportunity to take courses up at UConn, which is within walking distance. The school is full of these opportunities, that is, if you are willing to take them. The only fault I can really find with this school is the "gap" that seems to be between A-level and B-level classes. There is such a difference between these two levels, with A-levels being quite rigorous, while B-level material seems inadequate. This is definitely something that needs improvement.

This school has been an excellent fit for our family. Excellent staff, good athletics, a wide range of extra-curricular activities (mostly student driven). Academically challenging and focused on service and global awareness. Outstanding access to college level course work and motivation to take advantage of myriad opportunites.

This school is great for a certain type of motivated kid who already is a good student. They don't do so well for the type of kid who might still need a little push. I also think that they turn over way too much autonomy to the child before they are really ready. They run the school almost like a college.

I just came on this website out of curiosity, and as a student that graduated in '08, I'm very disappointed to see E.O. only rated at five out of ten. The heavy dependence on standardized test scores doesn't reflect the amazing strengths of this school. Unlike other schools in Connecticut, E.O. is made up of students from a variety of socio-economic (not much racial diversity, unfortunately) groups from three different towns, and a lot of kids have different goals for after high school. For kids who are college-bound, there is great success. For kids who don't think college is right for them, there are great choices at E.O. like the Ag Ed program and other vocational classes. I truly believe E.O. Smith does a great job of helping kids to succeed, despite normal issues with budget, cliques, etc.
