My daughter is in third grade at Black Rock Elementary School and she absolutely loves it. The teachers always answer all questions and are very helpful. My daughter comes home happy every day. Very nice atmosphere. Great school.

My daughter is in the 3rd grade. This is her 1st year in Black Rock. She loves it! Her techer is great & when I have questions she gets right back to me. Though, I have to agree with some of the other parents, there is a lot of homework & the book bags are too heavy! I think maybe set days for different subjects is a good idea. (Mon. & Wed.-Math, Tues. & Thur.- Spelling/Reading, something along those lines...) I work full time & have a step-son & a new baby on the way... sometimes there is not enough time when I get home to do all the homework, read for the req. 30min, feed her, get her showered, & in bed by 8:30-9:00 (I would like it to be 8:00).

Both my children have special issues to deal with in school. The teachers have been patient and very helpful is seeing my children prosper as individuals. The school is just a beautiful place to entrust your child. It is clean and safe.

I think Black Rock school is superb. My son left first grade reading well above average. He has learned to tackle very hard reading and manages to sound his way through words that he is unfamiliar with. I know he learned these skills from his teachers. The PTA is very involved and the school offers many specials like music, art, and gym. Definately a clean, safe environment. The Pre-K program is especially nurturing and has the support of many specialists,ie: (Speech Therapist,Psychologist, Nurse, etc). An excellent experience for both students and parents.

About the tests

In 2008-2009 Connecticut used the Connecticut Mastery Test (CMT) to test students' skills in reading, writing and math in grades 3 through 8, and in science in grades 5 and 8. The CMT is a standards-based test, which means it measures how well students are mastering specific skills defined for each grade by the state of Connecticut.
