I have to agree with the previous review - parental involvement is discouraged at every turn. In fact, you may never know if your child is sent to the principal's office since no one will tell you. They will expect your child to be "accountable" and inform you. This leads into my next point - the administration have their heads in the clouds. They have unrealistic expectations, although those goals could be met if parents and administration worked together - but that won't be tolerated. The teachers so far have been fine but, with larger class sizes, if your child is bright, they will get bored and be allowed to stray and lose focus and possibly get into trouble which, as mentioned before, you may never find out about. The parents tend to want to be involved, but the principal is too egomaniacal to nurture that team work potential. It's a shame. Looking for a proviate school at this point.
Yes, the Administration is not warm and fuzzy, and the class sizes are big, but the teachers are great! K-5, my oldest child had only one not-so-good experience with a teacher, but the rest went well above and beyond the call and truly cared about "their kids". Yes, the building is in need of a renovation, but the staff blooms where they have been planted. As with most WH neighboorhood-based schools, there is an active group of parents as well, and the PTO puts on some good events. My family never misses the Springtime Duffy Fair!
Like all WH schools, Dufry is test-driven and score-focused. This school is incredibly old, tired and depressing to look at. Class sizes are huge, this year in the high 20s. Teachers are dedicated and caring, and there is a high priority on children assuming personal responsibility.
We had been attending Whiting Lane, but a move necessitated a transfer to Duffy. The change was welcome and smooth. The teachers and administration went above and beyond to make our child feel welcome, and to assure he succeeded. Looking forward to a new year.
This school focuses on academic success and teaching children responsibility & accountability. It is not a warm and fuzzy school and does not emphasize the arts or music. It may not be for the family who likes to be very involved as parent involvement is not encouraged. Not a very diversified school, racially or economically. Administration can be very difficult to approach and work with.
