WCS is a wonderful school. Everyone is caring, supportive and knowledgable. They just added a new security system this year. They have one of the best elementary libraries that I've seen including both public and private schools. Their computer instruction is top-notch. Currently some grades have just slightly less students than public schools but their student to teacher ratio is still lower than public schools.
The WCS Middle and Elementary school are both excellent. The curriculum that is taught is refined and carries with it the God centered viewpoint that needs to be instilled at a young age in today s culture. I m very happy with the affordable pre-k program that they started this year which is more affordable than most of the daycares in the area. School enrollment is up and the facility is modern with technology in the classroom a big focus. Smart boards, interactive computer labs, ect. One of the biggest differences that I see compared to the other schools in the area is the caring nature of the teachers and principle. I thought that I wouldn t be able to afford the school but the tuition assistance makes it affordable for most anyone. You have to ask about the tuition assistance, it doesn t get offered unless asked for. Overall great school.
As a former student of WCS I am happy to say that it helped set a strong foundation for my schooling and relationship with the Lord. It's a very small school; therefore, there was a limited social opportunity and there were alot of cliques. While this was a Christian school, I found the teachers (especially the Bible teachers) to be very closed minded and unaccepting of other religions and sexualities. I found the academics to not be quite so driving and demanding. The academics are perfect if your student is looking for an adverage-level, relaxed school environment. One good thing I have to say though is that the music programs are excellent. The choir and band programs are phenominal and you can't find anything better! WCS prepared me well for my journey with Christ and it was a good foundation for my further education.
Over all the school is good. There are teachers who can be very judgemental if you have different veiws then them. Personally I support gays and have had problems with teachers when I was at the school because of that. Classes are very educational and the teachers give you plenty of time to keep asking questions and encourage you to do your best. Discipline can be a problem. The problem is only taken care of for a moment and often comes back.
The school has only four AP courses. Academics are not the focus of the school. As for the Christian aspect, it is a fundamentalist Christian school, which preaches "one" way of thinking and believing. Mutliple perspectives are not encouraged.
This school is for you if A Christian School is your priority. The main focus (as it should be for a Christian School) is God. Academics come 2nd or 3rd in their priority. The teachers are very low paid and because the requirements are limited 1. Christian teacher 2. able to afford to get a minimal salary they dow not have many qualified teachers that focus on academics. This school does not offer a better education than the Delaware PublicSchools. It does offer a Christian environment and is a small school. Its' just too expensive for the education it offers
I am a parent of two high school students both of which have been at WCS since Kindergarden. I am extremely thankful for the investment that the administrators, teachers, coaches, staff have made in the lives of my children. WCS is not a perfect school, but it is a place where learning is encouraged and modeled and where the teachers give of themselves for the good of the students. Subjects are taught from a Biblical perspective and practical everyday Christian living is encouraged and modeled from the Bible classes and weekly chapels. Students are encouraged to use their God-given abilities for Him and be leaders in their school, class, team, and community. There is a quality of excellence in academics, music, art, drama, sports, and Christian service at Wilmington Christian.
I have four children. Two are in college after attending WCS from K through 12th. The other two also started in Kindergarden and are still at WCS. My opinion of the school is very high. My son in college has done very well. I feel that WCS really helped him with discipline and preparation. My daughter in college has just started but she got great scholarships based on merit and music. Despite the schools small size the sports program is very good (I am not a sports expert myself). The music program is excellent. The small jazz band finishes the fall and spring music programs each year and these events are a pleasure not a duty to attend. Each academic subject seems excellent. My family especially appreciates the math science subjects since Dad and Mom have technical degrees. Last and best, the school has a pure and decent Christian atmosphere.
As a WCS alumni, I recommend this school highly to those parents who want to push their kids academically. WCS offers great AP and Honors courses. Even the college prep level courses are enriching and more difficult than public school courses. There are plenty of activities to be involved in and the athletic department continues to grow and thrive. There is a good mix of socioeconomic representation as well (white, black, wealthy, middle class, etc.). My only concern would have to be that for some teenagers attending the high school, the Bible courses and chapel services could push a teenager away who is struggling with rebellion and who is questiong God , alienating them further from pursuing a life of faith. WCS is a great school academically, but it ended up pushing me further away from The Lord (due to some overly zealous teachers) until several years later down the road.
