I only give four stars as my children have just started at Downes in Jan 11 and things could change. I have to say that everyone has been welcoming. I see no truth to an earlier review regarding the principal. She's been very communicative and approachable. My children have minor special needs and everything is being addressed and then some by many teachers and staff. There is a team spirit here i did not have in my former school in NJ. The PTA is very busy and involved lots of programs for the children to participate in. So far it has a very good feel and I am happy about the diversity

I love Downes School because all my children and now some of my grandchildren went/go there. All my children received a great education there and developed a love of learning that has seen them through coolage and for most grad school.

I saw the one low score for the principal at Downes & I totally disagree. No one works harder to make sure the school is the exemplary school that it is. She is a strong leader for the staff and a loyal supporter of the PTA. I volunteer at the school several times a week and I see all of the good work that is being done there. The banners in the cafeteria honoring the school & the teachers point to the level of commitment of this principal & staff. Finally, check out Downes' DSTP scores to know that this school is rated E for Excellent!

I love Downes! The staff is excellent and work hard to help each child excel. They are consistantly rated as a 'Superior School' and their DSTP scores are usually at the top of the state scores. There are opportunities to participate in activities, such as the Steel Drum Bank, Science Fair, International Day, Talent Show, Fun in the Sun, TREK, and Walk to School Day. There is a very active PTA who even support the students with field trip money when families can't afford to pay. I am very pleased with the education my children are receiving at Downes.

Downes Elementary lacks principal leadership. The present principal does not seem to take parent issues/concerns seriously. She tends to want to go with the flow rather than ruffle any feathers. There are some outstanding teachers in the school; however, there is no consistency or accountability from teachers year to year. I have found the communication to be very poor depending on the teacher. In addition, we find that there is no focus or assistance for kids that are scoring below or average on the MAPP/state tests. I wish the schools in the state would model the schools that are doing well (testing, after school activities, etc.), as this would benefit everyone!

Downes Elementary truly has it all. My first-grader benefitted from a committed team of teachers who worked together to provide each child individualized, differentiated instruction. He also benefitted greatly from the school's diversity in both ethnicity and socio-economic status. There is no trend away from recess, music, or art here, and there are no rolling carts. We love Downes.

Downes is a fantastic school. There is active parent involvement and a true nuturing spirit here. Every teacher my children have had has been wonderful. This school has it all. Diversity, academics and loads of opportunities for personal enrichment. Any family would be welcome here.
