Our two-year old daughter just began attending the ELC this September, and it has been amazing watching her flourish in this environment. She seems so much happier at Friends than she did at het last NAEYC- accredited daycare, and we attribute that completely to the high standards for teaching and the personal connections that her teachers make with each of the children. It was the right fit for us!
I attended WFS for 14 years, pre-K through 12. I had an absolutely wonderful education- academically, athletically, and socially. As several reviewers have said, it is a family. It is a very unique place that encourages acceptance, tolerance, and being yourself. I went on to an Ivy League university and found college to be easy compared with Friends. I felt better prepared for my college classes than peers who attended some of the "best" schools in the country. I feel very luck and grateful to have attended Friends, and am seriously considering moving back to DE just to send my children there!
I am in my junior year at WFS and have been there since pre-K. The school is more than just a place to learn, it is a family, it is somewhere I can be myself, grow into who I want to be, and along the way meet the most amazing people. I can honestly say that every teacher I have had has touched my life in a meaningful way.
I went to friends for all 14 years and I loved it. I am currently a junior in college and I cannot express how well WFS prepared me for undergraduate work. As a math and economics double major my schedule is demanding and the work is difficult. The education I received in mathematics with the IB program gave me a step up not only in my freshman year, but in upperlevel courses also. Outside of the classroom WFS was an amazing place to be. The community is welcoming and supportive. I still email with my teachers and old coaches and stop by when I am home. They are people who genuinely care about their students. I consider myself lucky to have attended WFS.
Excellant teaching with emphasis on child oriented learning and values
My daughter started in 9th grade and is now a senior. She came from a fabulous k-8 independent school and we expected WFS to compare well. We were sorely disappointed. The facilities for HS are so/so. The teaching is very uneven. Expectations are very low. A mediocre school.
My daughter has attended WFS since Middle School and is now a senior. The opportunities the school has provided her with have been tremendous. It is more than just a school, it is a loving community. My daughter can be found singing in the hallway and even the janitor knows her by name. It is so safe there is not a need for locks on the lockers. Cannot say enough about it. Ellen deVrind
Special place to learn, grow, and succeed in both personal and academic challenges. My daughter attends the middle school currently and we are thrilled to be a part of a school with high standards for 'the students' as well as 'the people' they will become.
My children currently attend and the education couldn't be better! As a mathematician and finance professional, I can honestly say that the math program is the best I have ever seen. Children learn practical applications for math and are able to prepare confidently for standardized tests. The last reviewers assessment that his/her 'high honor roll' kids are doing better now could be for many other reasons. We could not be happier with our children's standardized test scores and their ability to apply mathematics as early as Kindergarten!
I had 2 children go to friends from pk-8,i was happier with the LS program and very disappointed with the MS,my children left for another high school and are much happier both socially and academically. The math program is horrible and since my children have left their math scores have significantly increased on standardized tests and the classroom.(I have high honor roll kids). The math is not taught, the kids get in groups and work on problems and that's all they do,it's very frustrating and getting extra help is really no help at all. The english program is stronger, science program is fair to better depending on the teacher. They have great sports facilities. Very few class choices at hs level. Be wary,it looks great but not worth the $$,there are better schools available.
My son graduated 9 nine years ago and the education recieved here was excellent. He learned how to balance his work and social life. Math was taught for a full year in word problems. As an African-American student he was always encouraged to be himself and was accepted as his own person. When he went to college he was very successful because of the prepartion in all academic arenas. Teachers were well prepared to teach very challenging subject matter and pushed hard for excellence while having a loving and supportive arm around students. It was well worth all the sacrifices my family made and I would do it all again.
