Do you have a YMCA nearby? They often run special classes for kids, that are designed not to overly stress young children...If I'm not mistaken, they generally don't recommend weight training for someone your son's age, but cardiovascular exercise is good...Would he want to participate in any organized sports, like swimming, soccer, basketball, or taekwondo? There are often "cross country" running clubs which feature "Fun Runs" and similar events even for kids his age and their families.17534
As with adults, loosing weight is best achieved by a combination of eating right and exercising. You might be interested in joining Greatschools "Healthy Foods" Group (You can find a list of all the groups by going to the pull-down Groups menu on the upper left side of this page.)17531
One of the best workouts for kids is sport-related. There are many options that will teach him how to get good exercise while making it fun, and teach him how to properly perform. Swimming offers full-body workouts, martial arts teaches physical, mental, and emotional discipline, baseball teaches hand-eye coordination.... A workout isn't just lifting weights, doing sit-ups, etc.
Check to see what, if any, after-school programs his school offers. Also, check out your local community center and YMCA. Many offer sports for children, who will be divided by age (so they're playing with peers).
If he's wanting to lose weight, combine the physical activity with a good diet. Doing things like knocking out the chips and replacing them with carrot sticks can make a huge difference. But, be sure to talk to a doctor before starting him on any type of diet or before suddenly starting any sort of exercise.17528
My mom use to always have my big brother do push ups and after a while he started making reps on one hand and then he started letting us ( me and my big sister a year apart and we were 4 and 5 at the time he is ten years older) sit on his back and when i got eight i was happy i knew how only one in my class and i took ROTC and i could knock em out in seconds. Push ups are great confidence builders and they help you to relieve stress, and make your upper body strong.17526
