I just moved to a new place. Yesterday I found out that my 6 year old called his teacher a bad name. The teacher had a talk with him and gave him time-out. Should I punish him at home too? He has never done anything like this before. Any suggestions about how I can deal with this?
As long as you sit down with him and explain that name calling is not acceptable and using foul language is not acceptable and will not be tolerated, that should do it. The teacher has already "punished" him by giving him a time out. But tell him that if you find out he's called anyone a bad name again, there will be consequences (no TV/video games, etc.).
Yes, i agree also. At 6 years old they have to be "punished", at the time they do the "crime". But i would have a "FRIM" talk with him, and if he does it at home,( then punish him) or even speaks "badly" about someone, he needs to know "that is not nice," and "How would he feel? " If someone said that to or about him.17842
What do you want your son to think? Do you want him to think that you too care about his behavior at school? If you do, then you need to talk with him so he knows it's important to you. He shouldn't just learn what's right and wrong from his teacher at school. What do you do when you get upset about something and feel like calling someone a bad name? You can help your son to develop his own ways to cope when he's frustrated or angry. But I'd also say - you just moved. Your son is likely feeling there's been a lot of change in his life- I hope his teacher took that into consideration. Maybe his bad language to his teacher is a sign he needs more help as he tries to adjust to his new school.17841
