I understand, to this day I still have problems. However my child is visual and auditory. The "Memorizing Multiplication: The Times Tables", is the absolute best. In one night my fifth grader not only remembered, but could recall the stories and the facts. We began in the third grade with flash cards, games on the computer, drills, and a host of other methods. It seems this is the only thing sticking. I wish I had learned of it sooner. Also oswego.org is a good one.
I agree, I love this book too as it has a much more divergent method for engaging the child to memorize the otherwise monotomous task!
If you have students or children who require a more engaging, fun, and different technique to learn their times tables then definitely look into this book which features mnemomic devices(pictures and rhymes that tickle a funny bone with kids) to help them remember and enjoy the times tables. They then plug in the substitute wrenched rhyme from pictures to remember the answer. They laugh while solving multiplication, what could be better?
example - a door represents 4 a hive represents 5 a chick represents 6 or a skate represents 8 so ie- 8 x8 = skate x skate = sticky floor(64) 6 x6 = chicks x chicks = dirty chicks(36) or 4 x 5 = door x hive = honey(20)
do you have kids that aren't getting their times tables but love jokes, and riddle type material then you'll have to get this book to learn more...
Thanks so much for this post Laurie, it made me remember the fun we had after discovering this book and making learning silly and fun!!!!

I came across this great new site that had some cool ideas about multiplication (among other things for our elementary school kids like reading comprehension, homework issues & even food & snack ideas!). A lot of the advice & info is through fun videos but there's also posted questions and you can directly email the elementary school teachers himself (he's the one who created the site). Check it out if you get a chance:
