This is a negative stereotype I come up againist constantly in children's literature. One such instance is this book my stepson had an English version of Hansel and Gretel. In this book the stepmother is starving the children to death! I gave this book the axe after we read it the first time. Thankfully my stepson patted my arm and said "you aren't like that." Does anyone know of any good children's book where they depict the stepmother in a better light?
At last! I have found some books about stepmothers that give us some credit. If anyone is interested in checking them out here are the book titles I've come across:
The Not So Wicked Stepmother, A Book for Children and Adults by Leslie Allgood Venable and Julie M. Harrison
The Stepmother's Diary (adult book) by Fay Weldon
Good Stepmother by Rudolph
In Praise of the Stepmother by Mario Vargas Llosa
You want to buy them amazon.com has them for as little as $3.00 40964
There is also a really cute movie called "Stepmom" with Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts. It chronicles some of the growing pains that can come when families split and reform in new ways.40965
You know we are not the wicked stepmother...How ever sometimes we will be labeled that if we do not allow children to something we think is unsafe for them..They do not see that part just the mean step parent.. As they grow they will understand us better and see the we are not the wicked step parent they thought when they were younger.. :)40966
Some actually are. My daughters sm makes comments about her weight, what she eats and now has my daughter at 8 years old...weighing herself daily. That is just a sample.
