V. interesting. I live in the UK but will be moving to CA in 2011. Children go to preschool (1/2 days) from 3 here and can go to school at 4. My son's DOB is 30 Aug so started school at 4! He was v. ready to go but agree with mommaprice1733

I do not think so. Furthermore, my daughter turns 4 Sept. 8th and she is SO ready for pre-school and has to wait another year. I think the Sept. 1 deadline needs to change. There's no flexibility.

I think it depends on the child. Are they mature enough or emotionally ready? I think that plays a major role in 'are they ready for school'!

No.I'm struggling to find something suitable for my 4 1/2 yr old. His teacher say he's too advanced for his pre-k class. Public schools don't want to start him early. We can't afford private. so what do I do to challenge my child? Teach him myself?

Absolutely. Why not stay in preschool or enrichment programs!

No way. My four year old is already reading and doing simple math. Her older sister just finished Kindergarten, and everything that she was doing, my younger one can already do. If I could send her to Kindergarten in the fall, I would.
