Hi, I am a potential new home owner in the florence area and have been hearing some negative feedback on the schools in the area. I do not have childeren yet but plan to in the next couple of years. Any advise/guidance, should we consider another town if a good school system is important to me and my husband.

School systems change over time, ginad210. And specific schools can change drastically in a short period of time based on changes in personnel and demographics, you name it. If you don't have kids yet, by the time you have school age kids things could be very different.

As you use sources like GreatSchools school finder (located here: http://www.greatschools.org/find-schools/), and talk to real estate professionals about the neighborhoods you are interested in (they're great for helping you find the amenities you want--parks, shopping, freeway commutes), you can also go in and speak to schools. Drop in at a PTO meeting and offer to volunteer. Even a 'good school' can become amazing with the help of volunteers. Smart schools even create "Future Families" groups to allow families to volunteer and support the schools in their neighborhoods long before their kids are school age.

Good luck.
