Kingergarten Cutoff-Date exceptions for Prince William County, VA

nsg_lists September 9, 2012

My kid has been going to a private pre-school for a few years now. She misses the cut-off date by 6 days. We had requested that if she could be allowed in Kindergarten last year. But school authorities refused saying that county rules are strict.

A year later, my kid started going to Kindergarten and then we realized that exceptions have been made that year including an exception to the principal's son who is 1 and half years younger my kid. Needless to say, I was not happy.

I took it to the higher-ups who said that the management had just changed last year and so they did not want to bend the rules then. I have also talked to the county board about this who said that no rules have been changed and they were very surprised to hear the story.

I have 2 questions now.
(1) What are my options? What would you do in my shoes?
(2) How do the rules work? It is a private institution who I guess can make/bend rules to suit their needs.

Please advise.

Hi nsg_lists,

It is frustrating to see that policies are implemented unfairly, especially when it affects you directly. So what are your options?

You can find another school where they implement the rules more fairly. Or you can decide your daughter is getting a good education, and let it go.

Essentially every school will make decisions that seem to favor someone, it just comes down to whether you can live with these more blatant types of decisions or not.

If it's a private school, they absolutely can make a decision on a case-by-case basis.

Good luck!

Thanks for the advice and that is pretty much what I am going to do. I firmly believe what goes around comes around .... and you have to bend the rules when you can.
