my son is too smart

he is in 2nd grade pass the state test with a 100% and pass the gate program with a 100% the school says he cnt enter the gate program until 3rd grade he does his work in class and then he falls a sleep he tells me that the class is to boring i need help on what to do because im tired of the teacher calling me for the samething everyday when he does this i have challeged him in all types of ways and he still comes out on top hes very smart what to do please someone help me..

I was there when my girl was in 2nd grade. She would daydream when the teacher would review the work from Monday everyday. There were many kids that were below level in her class but I was told it was my childs problem not the teachers. She ended up hating going to school, she had loved school until this. I ended up taking her out and homeschooling her, I had few other choices. She wants to go back this next year to school and I have already called the school admin office and they said that she would probably be in 8th or 9th grade and she is now 11. I wish they had moved her up 1 grade back then but I know she can do it. Just remember that you have to stand up for your child. Go to the principle and than the administration but whatever you do do not let them push you around. 82585

I see more and more kids ready for gate or advanced classes. Have schools droped their standards due to laws like no child left behind or are kids really getting smarter? Sadly I dout the teacher will help him. A good friend has an advanced child and she got told by the teacher "I teach 1st grade and only first grade. If that does not work for you then you can deal with it yourself, buy work books or something, not my problem."81703

Make an appt with the principal(s) and discuss your son's needs [have documentation and all that is happening at this time in the classroom (positive and negative that he is experiencing while attending).
If they do not accommodate your son's needs, then make an appt with the superintendent(s). Go all the way to state if there is a need. Do not skip the chain of command. Doing it right will give you a better chance of being heard, since you have attempted to get the assistance from each one below the other. Have your ducks in order at each meeting.
Do not give up! Your son seriously only can depend on you to stand up for him.
There have been experiences children have gone through while in school that has caused emotional damage in certain ways due to actions of adults. Do not let that happen to your son!
An adult in the child's life can help them succeed or harm them forever. You have to stay on top of it all the time.

Having a similar issue.
Just moved to new school system and son in 3rd grade. He was labelled "gifted" in 2nd grade and pulled out twice a week for enrichment. Gave all records to new school and he was put in the "gifted cluster" classroom. He was bored, but the teacher allowed him to read independently when his work was done. Met with her one month after school started, after first quarter ended and before Thanksgiving to discuss in class enrichment.
At the last meeting, she had discussed options with the principal and they want to put him in 4th grade. There is a Gifted program at another school; students are identified in 2nd grade sent there in 3rd. We moved in after this. We asked about the possibility of him going there this year, but a mid year transfer "has never been done".
Thoughts on having to put a child up a grade when there is a "gifted" program in the school district? 81581

oh my goodness lovergirl, it is so sad and unfair that students like your son are not accommodated. I can think of so many ways to challenge him in the classroom - all of which I'm sure you've tried... but I agree with my fellow posters here that you should have a conversation with the teacher. Perhaps if you offered to help in the classroom (by bringing relevant materials) she would be more accommodating.
Perhaps she could let you know what the theme of the week's lesson is in advance and you could take a trip to the library with your son and watch a documentary or check out some books on the topic to supplement the lessons. Perhaps he could draw, write a story, report or skit on the subject with his free time in class? 81388

Have you considered homeschooling your child for the remainder of the school year? That's the route we ended up taking because our county is only prepared to help the mildly gifted students, not the highly gifted or above students. 81385

I am sorry you are dealing with this, hopefully it will get better once Gate begins for him.
I have a 1st grader and am dealing with something very similar. We met with his teacher and got little to no results, and in someways the opposite results, almost as though he is being punished for being too smart. He has vision issues and right after we met with her she moved him to the back of the room. When we asked for adaptive homework, she gave him extra of the same stuff for 1 week and nothing since. She even took his extra reading book away (which he would read quietly when he was done with his regular work). His classmates are picking on him and calling him a nerd, which he takes in stride, but I can tell it bothers him.
I am at a loss as to what to do also. 81285

Your son has been identified, and next year he will be placed in the GATE program. I suspect there are other children waiting until next year as well. Set up a meeting with the teacher and ask how they are differentiating instruction for him. If they are not doing so now, then start asking how they can start doing so.
He has the same rights as any other student, and should be accommodated.

Wow, please try and get your son to a more interactive advanced school. Your son is very smart but since his school is not equipped to handle this, the teachers are going to blame him and make it seem like hes the problem. He needs more challenging work and a different appproach for example hands on i.e. science through actual gardening, or lego robotics or Aha Science. A lot of teachers can not accept that some of their methods are boring to students and then they start acting negative towrds the student. Please change schools if you can or maybe ask them to skip your son up a grade,81278
