Hi all- Looking to buy an apartment and want to give consideration to future kids/plans :) Know you're never guaranteed anything, waitlists etc etc but would prefer to buy in zones like PS41, PS235 etc. Would love to hear opinions or links to articles on Spruce. By the time my kids would go it would be about 7 years from now (call me crazy, but I'm not buying an apt in a bad school district, I was a teacher!!) so I know it would be much further developed etc. Just don't know if there's good data, articles, anecdotal info right now that would be helpful? Frankly I'm nervous about it, but with the incredible amenities etc I think it's worth considering. Really appreciate all helpful commentary, if you're here to argue with me or suggest there's something wrong with what I'm doing I won't reply/defend myself it's a waste of time :)
I am moving shortly and the biggest consideration was the schools. I looked at things such as MSA scores, percentage of children receiving subsidies for meals, enrollment compared to capacity, and number of PTA members. I also looked at other obvious factors, such as degrees of the teachers. All these items allowed me to pick the best schools in the nation, as well as my county. Most of the students are advanced level. I am very happy for them to start there next school yeat. 82601
You're not wasting your time, but since you're a former teacher, you have to realize that schools and districts change over time.
If you are looking at seven years from now, the entire student body will have changed over and many of the teachers and staff could have moved on.
Strong school districts tend to stay strong--areas that value education pay to keep those schools that way. But things can change. You can start by researching now, but you'll need to keep an open mind. Since your kids don't even exist yet, you don't know whether they'll have special needs or want to be astronauts or dancers.
Another perk about buying into a strong district is that housing prices tend to stay stronger there too.
Make sure you're working with a good real estate person to concentrate on the amenities in the neighborhood that are important. And you can look for good schools here: http://www.greatschools.org/find-schools/
