I'd like to hear from upper-elementary teachers on this one. WHat percentage of kids in your "low" reading group ever make it to the "middle" reading group? Is it standard procedure to have plans or goals to move kids up, or is it mostly a case of once you're in that low group, you are there for life?
As you might guess, I have a 5th grader stuck in the low group despite the fac that he reads on grade level and scores at the 60th percentile on achievmeent tests. He desperately wants to move to the middle group-- he's even reading the same novel they are-- and yet the teachers refuses to consider it. She won't even tell him what he needs to do to move up. And yet these groups are supposed to be "fluid." Fluid down, maybe, but never up.
