Science Programs for Elementary-Aged Girls?

meg51577 April 18, 2013

My daughter is in third grade and has always loved science. I know there is a great need for girls in science and am looking for some programs to get her involved in. At this age I think it is important to connect her with other girls who have similar interests before she thinks science isnâ??t â??coolâ?? anymore. Every program I have seen is for middle or high school students. Is anyone aware of any national or regional programs in Raleigh, NC?

Hi meg51577, and welcome to GreatSchools Parent Community.

You're a poster after my own heart. My daughter too is in love with science. My suggestions would be to check for programs at your local zoo, museums and even park and recreation department. They often have science programs for kids as early as kinder or first grade.

If your daughter's school doesn't offer one after school, encourage the PTO to start an enrichment program. There are many vendors who will come in and teach the classes.

Good luck, and let us know what you find out.

Google "Science fair" along with your city's name and see how old you have to be to enter. Our (very large) science fair takes entiries from kids as young as 4th grade. Most entires come through the schools, but if your school doesn't do science fairs just read through the directiosn to find out how to enter on your own.

Hi meg51577! My daughter has been learning extra science on this site beestar. She loves science! It is curriculum-based from 1st grade to 8th grade. The quick texts are full of all real life world problems, challenging stuff to help kids thinking - some of them make her think or is a great opportunity for me teach advanced concepts. I think it is nice and easy to use. Hope it helps!
