Navigating LAUSD for Kindergarten enrollment.

Hi there,

I just woke up in a panicked state on a Sunday morning realizing that I am totally over my head trying to navigate the LAUSD to enroll my DD in Kindergarten next fall. We live in K-Town very close to Hollywood.

I refuse to enroll my daughter in our neighborhood school. (year round multi-track school, looks like a prison, low performing, etc.) I've been diligently researching and filling out applications for Magnets and Charters and other close neighborhood schools.

One one hand, I've done everything I can. On the other hand, there is a good possibility that nothing will pan out. Moving is not an option - my flat is rent-controlled and I am a single mom with limited resources. I had considered hiring a school consultant but it's kind of too late in the year. I had also considered holding her out of Kindergarten until next year - but it's really obvious that she is academically, emotionally and physically ready to move to the next level. She already towers over all the kids in preschool and is at the top of her class in all subjects and art. Not to mention that preschool is expensive.

I guess the next step is to start filing for Intra-district transfers but the internet is really vague on the process. I guess I walk in to the school - get paperwork - have the admin at our neighborhood school sign it and turn it in to the school of choice and wait to see if we win the lottery for any available seats.

Not knowing really sucks!

Welcome to the GreatSchools Parent Community.

By now I'm hoping you've found the Los Angeles community http://www.greatschools.org/california/los-angeles/community.gs?content=1967

I was not even aware there was still a year round elementary school left in LAUSD. I was told they were all off track as of last year.

If you've applied to magnets and charters, your next option will be open enrollment which will occur in April. Schools with seats available will announce a lottery and students will be announced in May.

This all seems terrifying when you have one child and you need one spot. But the truth is the more options you apply to, you will get into one. Because people apply to more than one option, they turn down multiple spots, and you will get into one.

Good luck, enjoy this beautifu respite from the rain, and it will be fine come August.
