"Hello i am an advance student and i would like to say it is best to have
mixed classes. I believe why is because those of us who feel at peace with
people of difference in gender i was raised by females and i look up to
them. Allowing this is both bad and good the pros are like in my old
school challenger the allowed co-ed, and i think i liked it alot more
then the option of making it to were we are in different class. i thank
you for your time.
"What i prefer is single-gender school. You may post something "for" this
topic as you have done it "against"
"Yes, single sex classrooms are a must. Boys need to be more active during
the day and have more hands on activity. We must get our boys away from
the girl oriented classroom. The other option is to change it and make the
girls learn in a boys oriented classroom. That option I don't think is
fair to girls. Both sexes deserve an equal chance to succeed.
"I would not like to add my personal feedback but rather discuss the facts.
Is it a fact that same sex schools are dominant in academics? Would we
want to send our kids to schools where performance is overwhelming. Women
and men are meant for each other but at what time and place. You decide?
"School should be co-ed. Some children are awkward with others of their own
gender. For example, certain girls who are tom-boys might not be
comfortable in a room full of girls. The mixed genders are preparing kids
for the real world, where things are not segregated.
"I am doing a persuasive essay on Segregated schools and I believe that
this website needs more information on what the parents BELIEVE rather
than what officials THINK and what everybody THINKS. More information
would be very helpful, and this is coming from a student in Jr.High.
"i dont think we should have single sex eduacation "
"I am doing a persuasive essay on why kids of different gender should be
separated. There are some disadvantages, but they are outweighed by the
advantages. Private school is the only option for this opportunity, but
only 10% of students attend private school dueto economic preventions.
"Co-ed schools, obviously! I would NEVER want to be unprepared for the
"real world", and I would NEVER send my kids to one either! GO CO-ED
"i think single sex schools would be a good idea because kids are too
wooried about daiting and the popular kids always pick on the other kids
and make them feel bad. i have been observing this kinda thing for a few
days now and i have noticed girls that like a guy try too look good for
them and daydream more about them then work on their own school work. if
we had single sex schools it would be better for kids learning and they
could acually have success in high school. now i know im only 13 but i
think this is a really good opinion.
"Thank you for writing an article on this. It helped me big on my co-ed
debate. :) "
"Who would even think of such a thing? That is a horrible thing to do. Boys
and girls need to interact with each other. What's even the point of
separating each sex? It's not like it will help any process of learning or
"This is my top source for my project. Thank you very much :D
"Personally, I'm glad to be enrolled in a co-ed school. Being with both
boys and girls is just another form of diversity. That's why there are
laws mandating that company boards have to be at least a certain percent
women (which I personally think is discriminatory, but that's not the
point). Maybe it's just my imagination, but it seems to me that girls
sometimes offer different points than boys. Also, if boys and girls are
educated separately, I think it would support the idea that girls learn
one way and boys learn another way, which would encourage teachers to
teach to the gender, not the individual. Differences in learning style and
talent probably vary much more between two individuals of the same sex
than between the population means of boys and girls.
"Wow, anyone can post on here? Cool. The more I look into the issue of
single-sex vs co-ed education, the more I am glad that Americans have the
option of either. Mind you, not all Americans can afford the private
schools that tend to offer a single-sex option, but it seems like the
whole system may be restructured in the near-ish future anyway. I
personally am glad that I attended 13 years of public, co-ed school, and
that I will be attending a public university with a student body including
both genders. This is because I value the way my male and female peers
interact and work together voluntarily, and the equality it implies.
However, many single-sex students are quick to point out that they do not
lack for socialization with the other gender; they simply must seek it
outside of school. If you want my far-from-expert opinion, co-ed schools
are always a good default option, but some students certainly might
benefit from a more specialized education. We do try to ca!
ter to individual needs, and some individuals probably flourish in a
single-sex learning environment.
By the way, anybody complaining that they "disagree" with this article
probably didn't read it. It offers a number of pros AND cons; in other
words it is impartial.
"thank you for this excellent information about same gender schools vs
co-ed:) itll really help me with my debate "
"this is so good
"this is so cool
"I feel that single sex schools seperate boys from liking girls and girls
from liking guys. I also think that those who think that single sex
schools are better are trying to say that being friends with your opposite
sex is not a good idea. I'm only 13 so i know how it feels to not be
friends with my opposite sex "
"we have to write a essay in english class about same-gender schools. this
will really help me! thx :) "
"this web sit is awesome and cool
"Thnk you so much! I'm from Germany and I have to talk about single sex
education in my next text! So this Article helped me so much! :) Thank
"This really helped! thanks! :D
"I wanted more reasons against single sex schools and I only got reasons
"This really helped me with the project I'm doing in social
studies.......so thank you "
" This is a great article!
"i say this article is okay because the second page could have givin alot
more of information about this subject "
"I am going to be starting a single sex school but am not intimidated by
this at all, as it was not just my parents choice but mine too, alot of
people I know quite well go there and enjoy it tremendisly. Its just a
debate that has two extremely good arguments on both sides
"this is not a helpful website no fence
"I am in my fourth year of all-girls education (started in seventh grade,
now I'm in tenth grade), and I think it's amazing. When subjects get a bit
awkward in the classroom, most people are more comfortable because there
are only girls. Additionally, my friends and I are not part of the
boy/girl drama that plagues the lives of many people our age. Sure, there
are several girls at our school who seem to spend more time at our brother
schools than at our school, but if they didn't want to have too many
interactions with boys, it's easily avoidable. Yes, a downside is that
single-sex education does not allow people to develop social skills
necessary for communicating with the opposite sex, but this usually
happens with people who aren't very social in the first place; they would
not necessarily develop communication skills in a co-ed environment,
either. Also, as another commenter pointed out, dances and weekends are
great for socializing with the opposite gender, if you're wo!
rried about that.
"i feel that if your in a single gender school system that you won't
develope social skills with the opposite sex vary well and it'll be hard
in the future for the children "
"Single-Sex Education. You either are on one end or the other. I on the
other hand can swallow both sides equally. Although I do find that
single-sex education does improve test taking and study skills. I really
don't understand why people assume that teens in single-sex schools can't
socialize normally like teens in a coed school. There are of course dances
and weekends for that kind of thing. I also have to comment on how
ridiculous the bullet point about how if there is high percentage of girls
in a classroom that the overall grade average of the class will preform
better. The only reason why that is is because of the majority of females.
It'd just be like going to an all girls' school.
"The most important thing that people I think are forgetting is the fact
that how single sex classes will actually do positive things. Most of
these comments, are going on and on about how they personally wouldn't
like single sex classes, because they enjoy interacting at times with the
opposite gender. If you ask me, maybe you should read evidence and
information on this topic, and try to base your opinion on that, not just
decide based on your feelings and experiences. I am a sixth grader in a
middle school in Howard County. I am doing this topic as part of the
debate league in my school. Single sex classes allow kids to do better,
and not always think about what the girl/boy in front of him/her is
thinking about themselves. You have got to admit everybody, isn't that a
huge problem. Most kids ( in general) rather be popular than be a
brainiac. They often want to get the best "catch( date)" for themselves,
and this is a huge distraction in most middle/high schools across th!
"i think boys n girls shouldnt be seprated becuz they could be taught
together n learn better............ ;-) single sex school is the worst
idea ever especially if you want your child to grow and develop their
personal and social skills they cant do that if they are confined to one
gender type " ........ I Disagreee we should be taught together;-)
"The person who wrote a comment on 11/29/11 needs to learn how to spell and
i think he/she needs to calm down. Im a 14 year old boy that goes to a
private school and before that i went to a public school and i didnt do so
good. When i started private school ive had better grades than
ever..."Jeez guys, lighten up"
"im writing a speach on single gender education and this did not help me
because i am con for this kind of schooling "
"I think same sex classrooms can have a wonderful outcome.... Just remember
teachers are the X factor.... If lessons are tailored to meet the needs of
boys and girls individually then a more structured classroom can benefit
all of the students. Less distraction and more learning!!! I taught sixth
grade in a co-Ed setting and found that girl problems and boy dilemmas
hindered learning because I would have to spend instructional time dealing
with playground issues. Same sex classrooms within co-Ed schools might
just be the new wave that can pull us out of the educational slump that
our country is in!!!
"The social biased of the people today is quite ridiculous. All of you are
so biased to your own opinion and worried about how he spells things, that
you don't even look at the information he lies above. You all are
complaining about study's that people have made and he choose to use them.
He makes a clear and specific point. I agree.
"Single sex education has got to be the most rediculous thing i have ever
heard. Those "Scientists" are assuming that all girls learn alike and all
boys learn alike, their research is based on averages and does not look at
every student as an individual. Now, if someone wants a kid to take a test
to find out what is the best way for that child to learn and then place
them into classrooms accordingly, that is a pretty good idea. Tom those of
you saying the people from co-ed schools doent even know how to type, keep
in mind, most single sex schools are private which costs money. The
parents who had the time and money to put their kids through private
school are going to pudh their kids to do better than some kid living in
the ghetto with abusive parents would, it has more to do with the parental
involment in a their child's school life than single sex educational
environments. Also, it could just be a typo. Jeez guys, lighten up!
"If you are going to talk about how you can learn just as well in a co-ed
school as a single sex school then you may want to check your spell check.
It may help make you seem slightly more educated.
Dearest people, the people/
always arguing and full of hate,/
why oh why should we ever/
turn out this way? Single-sex,/
co-educational, why does it matter?/
Girls, boys, everyone;/
WE CANNOT REMAIN LIKE THIS/
do you hear me?
"Someone please try to exaplain to me how you can be happy in a single sex
"this did not help me at all
"It's obvious that Coed schools did so much for all these posters who can't
even spell words such as 'single' and can't figure out where a period goes
in a sentence.
On topic, school is a place for learning. In fact, you spend more time out
of school than in school. Excluding boarding schools, students would have
plenty of time outside of the classroom for social interaction. There will
always be cases for people who didn't mesh as well as others, but it is
circumstantial evidence. Most research shows that either one is just as
good as the other.
About how this is discriminatory, well I think they are grasping for
straws there. If it is offered to both sides, and is equal to both sides,
is it discriminatory? Or next are we going to say that there can't be high
school football as girls aren't allowed to play all positions, or that
softball/baseball should be cut because each gender can't play on the
other side? Grow up, America.
"I recently graduated from an all boy's high school and I just found myself
laughing uncontrollably when I see that the most critics really have against
a single sex school is social interaction. Through personal experience with
friends from public school I have heard complaints on my abilitiy to talk to
girls with such ease. "You have more girl friends than I can even count," a
close friend of mine would say that goes to a Co-Ed High school. I believe
that people have forgotten about this simple aspect of American life called
"The weekend." This glorious time of the week WHERE STUDENTS ARE NOT IN
SHCOOL. Clubs that do provide great oppurtunities to meet people from other
schools. Social contacts are exchanged and friends are formed. (This is how
I met my prom date and current girlfriend) The serperation to interact with
girls in a more fun enviornment such as the mall or movies didn't conflict
with my focus needed in the classroom.
The most amusing arguement I saw was
"•Students in single-sex classrooms will one day live and work
side-by-side with members of the opposite sex. Educating students in
single-sex schools limits their opportunity to work cooperatively and
co-exist successfully with members of the opposite sex."
Right after high school I was offered the oppurtunity to do office work
where most of the staff is female. This arguement holds no water considering
that myself, and past classmates who were also offered jobs at other
institutions, work just find with female co-workers. We hold a sense of
professionalisim that these critics failed to comprehend.
Another fun arguement against single sex schools is the maturity of Boys. Oh
those crazy ravid immature boys. People making this arguement need to mature
themselves. I have noticed more immature and emotional drama come from co-ed
schools than I observed from my own school. Of course immature jokes are
exchanged amongst my peers, but the same can be said from all sorts of
enviornments. Like said before, a sense of professionalisim is applied to
the proper situatuion, and distinguishing the diffrence between co-ed and
single sex, I see the ability to differentiate the proper and imporper
situations is more evident in single sex than that of co-ed schools.
Coming from a teenage boy that scored 2100 on his SAT's, full time college
student, part time job as a student intern, I hope parents do not disregard
single sex schools as an option for their children. The enviornment is
unique, warm, and can provide oppurtunities you would have never thought
possible for your child. A $15 an hour job right out of highschool and a
$10,000 scholarship, all coming from a student from a single parent
household isn't to bad.
"I think what a lot of people are forgetting when they read this article is
that single gender classrooms are completely VOLUNTARY and OPTIONAL.
Students can try it out for a year and if they dont like it go back to a
co-ed classroom. They're still getting social interaction at lunch times
and recess. Schools are offering this as a CHOICE NOT as a mandatory
action. I think it would be very beneficial in core classes in elementary
and possibly middle schools.
"hmmm where have we heard seperate but equel before? and not all kids are
the same. besides think of all the immature boys that will just act up the
whole time. it would be a disaster. not to mention social retardation to
a new level!
"when was this article written?
"I found this very informative. A great debate topic."
"single sex school is the worst idea ever especially if you want your child
to grow and develop their personal and social skills they cant do that if
they are confined to one gender type
"im doing a paper with my friend bailey & i am doing the cons of having a
one sex school and she is doing the pros. any one have a good website i
could visit that will help us both out? thanks:)!"
"im in a mixed sex school and i think one gender schools is a good idea"
"i dont like this"
"This information is very insightful. I'm intrigued by the research that
indicates that boys perform better at cooler temperatures and that girls
perform better at warmer temperatures. If anybody could give me a source
where I could take a look at the research myself, it would be greatly
"I liked this article. Congrats"
"I think this websites gives really good information and gets straight to
the point. It answers alot of question that we want to know."
"this is best article that i never read"
"i truely disagree on this article"
"im doin an english essay on the benefits of attending an all - girls
school and is having trouble in understanding why there would be less of a
distraction in an all - girls school
ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ?????"
"I think you need to tell the reader which ones are pros and cons on this
subject. I also dont really know what some of these meen so I think you
need to make it more specific."
"This article helped me with my NHD project. (National History Day) I knew
there were private schools with girls only and boys only rules, but I
never knew there were some schools with optional single-sex classes! This,
and many other websites, helped me greatly with my project. Thanks!!! =D"
"The merits or demerits of single sex education is most difficult to
conclude. In Trinidad and Tobago for example, there has been a large scale
move to make all public high schools (not primary ones) single sex. In my
view the policy was ill thought out, rest on little or no published
researched and based on the assumptions that because a few single sex
'prestigious' schools do relatively well it justified the policy! What
further gives this policy support, strangely is the applaud of elitist and
coveted racist groups that previously argued that mixed schools were
designed to propagate race mixing! The fact is however, that the policy
does not fulfill stated educational goals but it creates yet another
opportunity for segregationist to justify their ideology by pseudoscience.
One wonders given what is published on wider American and Caribbean
research if the single sex argument is not soon to be turned into a
'single ethnicity' one ending finally in a new apartheid system. !
"I think that Single ginder schools are good. Most study's show that grades
improve while attending a single ginder school. Also if students go to
single ginder schools you can still have time to be social with the other
gender after school. "
"has anyone noticed that this article talks mostly about what happens when
there are all girls in a classroom, but now when there are all boys in a
classroom? i know that there are boys schools out there and if your think
about the maturity level of high school boys there is can't be much
learning and studying going on at an all-boys school. and really what is
the point of same-sex schools? when a man or a woman transitions into the
work place, they will be hard-pressed to find an office that is strictly
all-male or all-female. boys and girls need to learn how to work together
from early age on so that they will not be socially crippled in their
adult life. i went to a co-ed school and i did just fine with my school
work. not as well as i had hoped but that is because i'm not a very good
student. if i didn't go to a co-ed school, i probably wouldn't have had as
many friends as i had. many girls in my school were real b***ches, and
boys were the next best thing. many people sa!
y that same-sex school help break down the stereotypical roles for each
gender, but i think they add to these roles. to me same-sex schools are
just not a good idea."
"im in middle school (8th grade) and i dont find myself distracted at all
while the opposite sex is around. i actually work better when im in a
group with a guy in it because they have a different way of viewing
things. while im the 'i have to make the project pretty' theyre the 'does
that seem practical' part and that helps alot. also, girls at my school
are rarely ever too shy to say they dont get it, even in front of guys.
and if we dont learn how to interact with eachother now, when will we eve
have the time? these years are the years that we figure out each other,
not years to be seperated."
"i enjoyed this passage"
"I think that the children should decide if they want to go to a single sex
or mixed school after all its them that have to spend their time
there.Studies show that people who went to single sex schools had very
hard time going out into the world and succeeding because every time they
got told 'NO' their confidence was knocked, but kids that went to mixed
schools have an easier time getting out there because they know how to
charm there way around people because of the skills they learned in school
so i think that us kids should choose and yes im am a child aged 13 and i
have just started my first year in secondary and i am excelling at it with
my people skills and in the classroom i came from a mixed school as well
and it prepared me for everything they have thrown at me now im here so i
think mixed schools are better and thats just my opinion :) "
"This article was somewhat helpful. My position for a speech at school is
that children do not benefit from single-sex schools. This article was
pointed more towards the pros of single-sex education rather than the
"I am totally against having girls and boys mixed in the same school and
classes during the secondary school years (i.e. the 10-16 year age group).
Secondary schools should aim to create an environment where youngsters can
concentrate on academic, social and personal development and life skills
without undue distraction by members of the opposite sex and without the
stresses of having to compete with others for mates. Co-educational
secondary schools are particularly stressful for girls who take longer to
develop physically or are considered to be less attractive than others.
Because of this there is much more potential for severe bullying in
co-educational secondary schools than in single gender ones.
However adolescent youngster do benefit from mixing with members of the
opposite sex in supervised environments such as band clubs, certain church
groups, sports clubs, music schools etc. for a few hours a week.
But it is not right to mix adolescent genders every day between 8.00 am
and 4 pm. Such a time window should be reserved for
academic/artistic/personal and social development instruction WITHOUT
UNDUE SEXUAL DISTRACTIONS.
"I think going to an all-girls HS was a huge help. I couldn't sit by the
phone waiting for a guy to ask me to MY school dances. I learned to assert
myself. Also,ALL HS is a bad example of 'preparing for real world' - when
did you ever have 95% of the people you meet that were all your own age
and going through puberty at the same time? HS - co-ed or not - is
nothing like the 'real world' - thankfully."
"Thank you for providing an objective review of this topic. Most of the
articles I have found online are so biased it is hard to form an opinion.
Our family has used your website a few times when we have relocated and
you are pretty spot-on with your school ratings. Thanks again."
"i needed the info for a debate we are doing at school and this article
really didn't help me with the cons of same sex schools.I really didn't
like this article as this seemed as a one sided opinion"
"im doing a report for school; the pros of coed school. this article really
helped thanks a bunch!!"
"its not that boys and girls learn differently when they are sharing a room
with the opposite sex, but its the ability of each student that makes them
succeed in class, school, etc. everyone has individual needs. not all the
girls have the same problem as the boys. Some boys may have the same
problems as some girls, or vice versa. So what they say in this article
that the opposite sex is the reason (distraction) why they don't learn
equally as when they are in a single sex classroom, is false because
everyone learns at its own pace."
"I think there are positives and negatives to single-sex and co-ed schools.
I went to co-ed schools all my life and wished I had gone to an all girls
high school. I think over-all, if teachers are trained properly and the
curriculums are established for girls and boys, single-sex classes would
be a positive. Perhaps have one school, but separate out the classes,
especially gym class. Then there is intermingling of the sexes but
classroom settings that focus on school work instead of staring at the
cute boy or girl in class (for example)."
"Single sex schools are regressive and are extremely sexist. Studies show
that Boys and girls learn perfectly when together!"
"dont like it... sorry. but i think when u learn as a whole the whole co-ed
thing is good but when u haave a orginizaton such as just wait come.. its
better if the boys and girls are apart. :)"
"Single sex schools are not good because they do not give you the same
oppertunity to us as a co-ed schools do... you shoulkd post some things
for debate teams. That is why I am doing this, because of one of my
classes. It is hard to find out things that are good about co-ed schools
and bad things about single sex schools
"no same sex classes, same sex classes are a big NONO"
"This did not help me at all : ("
"No single sex schools!!!!"
"coed schools are better for boys amd girls because they learn to interact
with each other. it's better for the real world because men and women
interact all the time SN"
"i think it would be a good idea because it gets the kids to do their work
then focusing on the oppsite sex!"
"very helpful used it for school, much thanks :)"
"I think that singal gender schools is good for students, because girls and
boys both think diffrently. they also distract each other from their
school work "
"Single sex schools can decrease guys grades because they like to compete
againest the oppisite sex for sports and school work. So boys won't work
as hard if they don't have girls to compete to."
"Single sex schools should be banned. Opposite genders need to be
comfortable with eachother because they intereact in the real world. Hi,
my name is Sally and I go to Northwestern College. I used to go to an all
girls school when i was in highschool, middle, and lower school. When I
came to college I was nervous around guys because I had never actually
interacted with them enough to learn how to. Co-ed schools are better
because they teach kids how to interact with the opposite gender"
