Median home price: $286,000
Population: 12,741

The word is out about Zionsville: Affordable homes plus great schools equals explosive growth. Enrollment in Zionsville Community Schools grew by 80% from 1996 to 2006 and is still growing, despite a housing slump. Currently the district has some 5,400 students in four elementary schools, two middle schools, and one high school (which is being expanded). The school district is on several state top 10 lists, including for SAT scores, graduation rate, and passing rates for math and English on state assessment tests. It's also in the lowest 10 when it comes to expulsions or suspensions.

Just 15 miles from Indianapolis and featuring a quaint, brick-lined Main Street shopping district, the town recently instituted a take-home laptop program for sixth-and seventh-graders. A survey found that the program has made students more interested in their science, social studies, and language arts classes. The district is hoping to expand it to all middle-schoolers.
